Is it possible to try to get your pup used to two crates at the same time?
Or is that an ineffective way to crate train?

We had the one crate which we kept in the bedroom at night, and brought downstairs into the living room in the daytime for puppy naps.
Carrying a 36" crate down and up the stairs everyday quick became a hassle so we set up a crate downstairs of the same size that was giving to me for free from a friend. Its a totally different crate but of the same dimensions.
Can that work?

I suspect it is actually better for him - then he can become accustomed to lots of different situations.

Perhaps every week or so you could swap the crates too, so he can get used to bed time in the 2nd crate also.

We did but it was for different reasons.

Because we travel a lot with our dogs we have a plastic crate for home and a fabric travel crate. We introduced them at the same time so that either one could be used. He also uses a different plastic crate when we are at my in-laws and at my brother's. I believe the more versatile your dog the better.

Yep. We use two crates. One in my office for day time and one in the bedroom for sleeping at night. Porter does great with switching between the crates.

Before our new pup we used to use two crates for him, one for day one for night. It was funny, the crates were the exact same but he figured out what each crate meant. When we say "go to crate" he would run into his downstairs crate for the day. He definitely knew the differences between the two. When we got the new puppy we moved both crates into our bedroom and that confused him a little but he worked it out. Two crates definitely work.
