IMO, I'm not totally convinced about the vaccine. I take our dogs every 6 months and they have bloodwork done to test for lyme, heartworm, etc.
Because I believe a 5 in 1 vaccine spun our Simon (pit/collie) into diabetes and then pancreatitus and sepsis and eventually his death, I will never vaccinate my dogs again for anything except for Rabies which is required by law. The 5 in 1 vaccines are supposed to be good for 6 to 9 years! And now I go to a vet that agrees that the vaccines are done way too much, its more about vets making money than what's best for your animal.
Sorry for the rant. |

I'm with you on the vaccine...not convinced at all..Here it is anti-biotics only....
It takes ticks 48 hours on a dog before they cause the disease, it sure is strange how she has lyme but there was no sign of a tick on her
Hope everyone is having a good day |

My little Sage had lyme disease--which she got in NJ! (for whoever that was that said that NJ was bad--it's true!!)
I will never vaccinate for lyme disease. We live in the mountains of VA, and ticks are pretty rampant. I take the holistic view that healthy animals don't get parasites in the same way unhealthy animals do, and for the most part my dogs never get ticks. That said, this year has been horrible for ticks!!
As long as you get the tick off before 24 hours, you have nothing to worry about. With a short coated breed that you love on daily, catching a tick before it's attached for 24 hours shouldn't be hard. We check our dogs for lyme disease at the end of every fall. And yes, you do want to catch it before it causes effusions in the joints and limping.
The risks of the vaccine can apparently be ugly. I hate vaccinating my dogs so much anyway, but apparently the lyme vaccine is rather scary. The dog can still get lyme disease if infected, regardless of their vaccination history.
Here's a pretty good article:

We didn't get the vaccination either as much like humans - it's no guarantee it will 100% prevent your dog from contracting the disease. I use Frontline and thought it was enough but again, different things work better for some than for others.
Also, they say once vaccinated, they will always test positive for lymes - so how would you ever really know if your dog got it or not - besides running more expensive bloodwork tests (c6?) and knowing the symptoms. Scary stuff these deerticks - very scary stuff.
Oh, and for that matter, as I had removed a deertick off my own spine and proceeded to get the rash, I do not recall removing a deertick off Rosie. Dog ticks, yes - but those deerticks are SO damn small, they can go unnoticed even in these short-coated weimys.
I'm glad to hear Nena is feeling better! Now to make sure Gunther stays out of the Dx! |

When I was a teenager we lost our 20 yr old kitty - who was otherwise quite healthy, after the vet we went to at that time gave her a leukemia shot that spun her to her death. I think that regardless of the animal, the breed, etc that at some point we have to think of what we are doing and just put our foot down. Why would you give a 20 yr old cat who doesn't even go outside anymore a leukemia shot? Needless to say my animals only get vaccinated against what I truly believe is important. I'm so sorry that you had to lose Simon that way - it is a horrible thing for anyone to have to go through.
I also agree with you that finding a vet that syncs with your outlooks on vaccs and the almighty dollar is crucial. There are at least 5 vets we pass on the way to the one we choose. |

I question whether or not I'm making the right decision when I hear someone say their dog tested positive for Lymes. And a breeder in my area told me that his TWO Weims died of Lymes. I think to ease my mind I'll have to have them tested every few months. It's good to be here and have other people share your opinion on such controversial topics such as these because it's hard when everyone else in your life, Vets, breeders, friends, family, etc... are telling you that they would do it this way or that way. UGH, I hate when I start doubting myself. It's so hard though when it comes to the health of your family. I have to remember that most of those opinions are coming from people who haven chosen not to educate themselves on the subject.
I really don't want to vaccinate Holly for anything else except Rabies (and even that will just be once). She had her 8 week vaccination and 12 week vaccination, both DHLPP, and that's it. I'm waiting until she's 18 months for her Rabies. She received those shots before I started reading up on vaccines in dogs or I would of had them all separated and spread apart. It's funny that I don't vaccinate my children for very similar reasons yet I didn't even think about the effects vaccines would/might have on my dog until she got sick. Not really funny...but sad actually.
Anyways, sorry for rambling I'm so glad I have you guys as my support system. |

When I say I have never seen a tick on her, I mean not attached. When we get back from a hike, I scour the dogs and I have found I think just two in 4 1/2 years on Nena just crawling and they were I think wood ticks - they are much bigger than deer ticks.

That's what I decided to do, just have them checked. I too like hearing other addicts opinons and info, because I also start doubting my decisions. |

My Cairn Terrier tested positive for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever after tons and tons of tests were done and we couldn't figure out what was wrong with him. He tested positive in March. After a month of doxycycline he still isn't much better. The RMSF left him with some heart disease and liver damage and some early arthritis (he's 3). It's very very very serious stuff.
I work for my vet. Our policy is that even if the dog tests positive for Lyme or Erlichia, unless they are showing symptoms we do not treat them for it. (Treatment is 28 days of doxycycline.) It's possible she was exposed to it, but not infected with it. An exposed dog carries the disease (that's how the ticks pick up lyme and what not) an infected dog comes down with actual symptoms (lethargy, bleeding, painful joints).
I vaccinate for it- I mean why not? It can't hurt.
Good luck! |

Scrbear11 - when you have some time could you post some pics of your Rhodie? I would LOVE to see him/her as rhodesian ridgebacks, great danes and of course weims are my absolute weakness. |

Hmmm... I guess you don't live in rural southern NC. Parvo is RAMPID down here. It's not uncommon for a dog who hasn't had his DHPP for a few years to get parvo. And as far as breeeder given, or owner given shots- I don't trust them at all. We had a dog come in with Parvo about a month ago- his owner had given him a 5 in 1 she bought through an online pharmacy- the dog ended up with the worst case of Parvo we had seen. The total bill at the end of the two week hospital stay was $3000. All because they wouldn't pay the $18 a year to get a DHPP shot. I vaccinate for everyone, and I recommend everyone else do the same. It's cheaper to vaccinate than pay the bill when the dog ends up with something like Parvo or Kennel Cough. |

I live in NY. Both of my Weims are rescues. They have both had 5 in 1 vaccines for numerous years. Last summer, we lost our Simon who was a collie/pit mix at the age of 4.5 years old. Simon was given a 5 in 1 vaccine, then when he wasn't acting right was misdiagnosed with a UTI which was really Diabetes. I took him for a second opinion and he was sent to Oradell Emergency Hospital in New Jersey which is a 24/7 hospital and one of the best in the country, where he battled the diabetes, pancreatitus, sepsis and after four days there, he died. The bill was $8000.
To not vaccinate my dogs anymore other than what is required by law is my choice and to each his own. |

How's Nena doing so far on her antibiotix?
We contemplatd vacc June since she came from CT and I think she had been when she lived there. Our vet (Rutherford Animal Hosp) is pretty on par w/ Oradell (cost- wise too!) and they recommend it for NJ...we've yet to see a flea or tick on either of them...We do rabies (req) and DHLLP since Junie had Lepto last spring. They way we spend $ on er visits, we figure we can cut certain costs and if you titre-test, there's no reason to (over-) vax. |

Nena is doing well. Thanks for asking. Of course, she thinks because she is taking all these pills, she doesn't have to sleep on the dog futon with Gunther, she has to snuggle with mom and dad. |
