Oh Thank doG Ruby's home, you have a Dx, she's feeling better, and you are all "safe and sound"!!
I can't tell ya waht a releif it was to see your post this morning. I couldn't imagine being away for a week and not knowing! (You'd thinkRuby was my dog!!)

I am glad that Ruby is home with you and that, through the surgery, you have some answers to what is going on. I hope Ruby heals quickly from her surgery and is back to her beautiful happy, healthy, energetic Ruby self very soon.
I agree about watching for a UTI... but Ruby's surgery was much different from a normal spay surgery -- what with all the extra poking and checking and such. (I would probably even call the vet and check to see if it's more of a concern. But I tend to worry a lot, sometimes more than I need to.)
I hope that Ruby learns to love her crate. Many dogs do. It's there own little place where they can relax and have a nap, even when they are not 'being crated'.

YAY! I'm so glad she's home. I hope that everything heals up and heals up quick!!! That was very generous of your Vet to say he'd take her kidney out for free. You really must have spent alot of money there in the last few weeks. 
After Holly was spayed she had to go to the bathroom alot too. She wasn't bugging me to go outside but when we were out there she would squat every minute! And of course nothing would come out except a drop or two after the first couple of times she peed. She did that when she came into heat too. |

I am VERY relieved that she is doing better and you have some answers. The peeing thing is probably just due to being irritated after the surgery. I am sure you will see her back to normal in a few days.
Ange, give her a big hug and kiss for us. Even my husband has been worried about her. He came home from NY the other night and one of the first things he asked me was if I heard anything..and that was in between being concerned that his truck was about to break down on the way home....

We have good news and bad news.
Against many people's suggestion, we went ahead with the surgery as I spoke with the vet about the pros and cons and if it was the right thing to do. Ruby passed some major clots the other day and Andrew suspected after everything the bladder, so he advised me (as her temp was under control and they monitored her in hospital for 2 days prior to surgery) to go ahead with surgery. Her left kidney which was larger than the other is the scoundrel causing the problems.
Bad news.. to stop this bleeding - as the damage is internally in the kidney somewhere, the kidney will have to be removed eventually if the bleeding does not stop. Time is her biggest friend here. He doesn't know if it is a congenital problem or if it is some type of injury she's sustained somewhere which is unable to heal itself properly - as you know sometimes her urine goes clear then it is bloody again. We have bought her first crate to try and keep her activity to a minimum to try and encourage this kidney to heal.
More good news - we come away with 6 nights stay at the vets, surgery, spay, anaesthetic, x-rays, blood coagualtion, fluids, medications etc for $430 I'm pretty sure they have thrown is a heap of freebies as we've spent an absolute bucket load lately. Andrew has said that if the bleeding does not stop, then he will take the ratty kidney out free of charge.
I doubted myself and the vet at first if this was the right thing to do, but in the end I am glad that we did go with surgery. |
Ange, we KNEW it was the kidneys AGES ago, didn't we! And that first vet looked at you like you were retarded  . Gut feelings are rarely wrong.
I'm glad you have some answers, and that even if it results in another surgery, there IS a solution.

we had a long and messy night.
We started out in the bathroom and she was happy to pee in there for a while but about 1am there was just blood EVERYWHERE in the bathroom, on the walls (WTF) toilet, handbasin, toiletpaper etc. It got too messy even for Ruby and she wanted out. I am dreading this cleanup.
I went out and slept on the dining room sofa and left the door open for her to come in and out (I think she peed - or tried to - about a million and one times last night). We both got very little sleep.
I'm sure this constant weeing is from the bladder irritation.
I just love her to bits... glad she's better and we know what's going on. |

I am so glad you finally have a diagnosis, and that she seems to be doing a bit better. I hope she continues to improve!
That clean-up does sound rough. I wish I lived down the road and could come over and clean for you, so you could avoid it. |

i think that is a great idea. if she will fall for it.. maybe get them in a pretty color so she will feel fabulous?
