I've been trying to see if there are any females in rescue in my area and, although it's a great thing that there are none, it also means that helping a little one in need will be logistically challenging. So I did a search for rescues servicing Ontario and I found this little girl in the Great Lakes Weim Rescue listings.

That is over 10 hours away from where I live. Has anyone here had any experience with organizing an adoption from far away? Is it possible to arrange a transport or is it better just to see if flight arrangements can be made? We were planning on getting another puppy from our breeder next year, but knowing that there are little ones that NEED homes, I'd really like to help one of them if I could.
Also, although the cost would not be a deciding factor I would like to know what the fee is but they don't indicate it on the website. Is it bad etiquette to ask them in the first email along with all my other questions? I just like to have all the information up front so I can make an informed decision on all fronts.
Before I email them and make a fool of myself by asking silly questions, I thought I'd ask them here first. |

Oh my goodness!! What a cutie!
Don't feel bad about asking questions, you want to be prepared. I imagine the adoption fee will be approx. $400 give or take.
Don't delay...those babies won't last long, I'm sure. |

Thanks for the price info. I didn't even click on the shelter info page right in petfinder, I was searching like mad on their independent site.
I have sent an email and will keep everyone updated.
I hope the name "Sprinkles" isn't indicative of certain habits she might have. |

Hey Marnie you are in the right place..I could not believe the support I got when I was adopting a weim the support was overwhelming the people that offered a drive for my dog...there are great people on here with great connections... |

I know that Michigan Weimaraner Rescue covers parts of Canada as well. And really, if you find a dog you love, regardless of where, the homevisit is usually the biggest obstacle - if there's a rescue of any sort in your area, they can usually set up the hv and send the ppwk to the weim rescue. Then the transport is the easy part - seriously! Everyone wants to see a dog get to it's forever home!
Good luck! Let me know if I can help at all! |

I just checked my email this morning and little Sprinkles has been placed. They have asked however if the placement doesn't work out for some reason if they can contact me, and of course they can...
So, I'm a little sad for me...but VERY happy for little Sprinkles. |

I just pulled an 8 year old weim from South Bend IN shelter because there was no room for this weim in rescue (not their fault, there are just too many.) The shelter lady was great. Long story short, had him vetted, boarded, transport arranged, and he started coughing, pneumonia, dead. Those of us involved in his rescue were and still are devestated.
There are all kinds of options available for transport. There is a huge underground transport system that moves dogs every weekend. In fact, Wulfie was going from Indiana to British Columbia. Anyway, there is something called Operation Roger, that's a trucking rescue, American truckers helping to save dogs. And, of course, there is the Weimaraner Rescue Railroad.
I have just started getting involved in rescue and have found it very rewarding, but also sad at times. That is why I became a foster for this magnificent breed. It is not hard; they fit in real well and are so grateful to be saved. The grown dogs are almost always housetrained, crate trained, etc.
Think about it, please. There are so many many wonderful weimaraners out there who deserve to be saved. Contact your local weim rescue and volunteer. Anyone who fosters will tell you how rewarding it is. I had my last rescue for 11 months, nursed her back from death's door. Was it hard to let go? You bet you $$$ it was; broke my heart, but she has an even more wonderful home than mine.
Please give it consideration. Now is the time for all of us to band together to help weims. Foreclosure is killing rescue; also deployments, and the usual crud"I just don't have time for him/her. She deserves a family that can spend more time with her/him." Yeah, deserves to die in a shelter.
Sorry, just on my soapbox, but PLEASE CONSIDER BEING A FOSTER. I can hook you up with many rescues that will be more than willing to take you up on this. Many rescue dogs are being boarded because rescue has no room. Shelters and even boarding facilities are not for weims.
Thank you for taking the time to read this; if I have offended anyone, it was not my intention. Just chalk it up to a cranky old lady.
By the way, the little puppies like Sparkle are EASILY adopted.
