Hand signals.

I had been kinda weaning Wrench off hand signals to do more by voice lately....though he does much better by hand....However, after going into the shop with Michale today and Wrench with us I realized I will keep him brushed up on hand signals because half the employee's there are deaf.....I realized today just how good hand signals are and how proud I was of my boy today for being so good ( these guys all have hunting dogs and love Wrench, one wants a Weim bad). Also...I realized that when we adopt in a few years we are opening to the possibility of taking in a deaf child...so hand signals will for sure be kept brushed up on now!

BTW, his eye is so good now that you can't even tell there was a problem...the vet has called twice to check up on him and give Weim advice and is so friendly.

So glad to hear his eye is better now. I take it the surgery went well.

I to have our kids trained on hand and voice signals. One day on garbage day I let the dogs out and the back gate was open but I didn't know. when I went out the front I found them across the street in the neighbours garbage. they were ready to come bolting back home when I car was coming and all I had to do was raise my hand in the air and they automatically went in the down position. I waited until the car went by and called them back!

It also helps in the show ring too to give them silent signals on what to do

Sounds like you have done a great job with him and that he really respond well

And to ad to training ways....One thing i do is at street crossings I train him to "wait" he stays and doesn't cross when I say Wait.....then I say "Cross " when it's time to go...and he does ....

He managed to slip out of his collar the other day ( the vet had loosened it and I hadn't payed too much attention) and of course it was right on the busiest street we ever walk along.....he was already being ornery since it was his first actual walk since surgery and he slipped out and ran off back toward the house...thank God didn't go into the street to the side where traffic was zooming by....but just as he got to the other street to cross to go home I snapped out of my shock and yelled " Stop" and of course he didn't" and I yelled come and of course he didn't listen to that so right as he hit the curb I yelled " Wait" and he stopped stone cold! I was so proud and so scared...I walked more into the persons yard we where by to get away form the street and called him to me and he came perfectly! Whew..I was shaking SO bad though!
