Has anyone here managed to potty train their Weim to know that the backyard is part of the house?
We want to try to train our pup to only go outside - not including the backyard. We want to associate the backyard as part of the house so he understands.
Our dog used to do that, but we never understand how he knew. He spent most of his live in apartment buildings and when we moved to a house, he just knew! Magical dog. |

I'm a little confused...so you want him to leave the backyard to go to the bathroom?
We trained our German Shepherd to do that. When we took him out to go potty we only took him in the woods. We didn't care if he peed in the yard but he had to poop in the woods. He got it very quickly and never pooped in our yard. When it snowed we had to clear a spot in the woods so he could see the leaves and go potty on them. |

| I don't know about the whole backyard. I guess just redirecting them somewhere else. Our dogs have a potty area in the backyard that runs behind our shed. We leveled it, made a 4"x4" frame and filled it with limestone. The limestone keeps their feet clean but we can still rinse the area. From the step we encourage "in the back" and when Marvin was younger we took him there on a leash until he got it. |

We don't want him doing any peeing or pooping in the backyard, mostly because we grow a lot of fruit and veggies back there. I know its possible, but it seems pretty challenging. |

| As long as you have an area near by that you can redirect him to it shouldn't be that challenging. My in laws Sheppy has been trained her spot of their 11 acres. It would be easier to do if you have everything worked out from day one and make sure he is empty every time you go in the back yard and you watch him just like you would for house training. |

| I don't think it's anymore challenging that just plain housebreaking. And since you're getting a puppy it should be pretty easy to do. You would just have to watch him diligently in the back yard the same way you would do in the house. When you guys are in the backyard playing take him out of the yard frequently to potty and praise him big time when he goes out there. |

My only concern is - my previous dog peeped and popped in the backyard.
He was epileptic and during seizures he would release everything - whether inside and out of the house (obviously he didn't have control over it.)
We tried everything to clean the carpets and floors but we are worried that the puppy will still be able to sniff it out and know its ok to pee there.

A buddy of mine built two "potty" areas for his Choc-Lab in the backyard. One is a doggie-urinal with a short (2-3 feet tall) wall around three sides for privacy and a drain on the floor. Next to the urinal is a similar set up designated for himm to poo.
The dog is brilliant and my friend was able to train him perfectly. He just says "potty" and the dog goes over and does his business. It's pretty amazing! |

We'll we are planning to walk our dog a lot but I guess a spot around the house would be beneficial too. I'm thinking between my house and the neighbours house, we share a small grassy area. There's a gate we share that attaches to both houses but at the other end, there's the 2 gates for our respective backyards. No one really cares for that area so maybe ill clear him a spot there. |

Zaphod always used the backyard before we got Marvin and he quickly learnt to use the spot and Marvin was not bothered by any residual smells.
You can get products at pet stores to eliminate odors both inside and out. We used an outdoor one when a cat kept marking in our yard and you can even spray it on some plants for the leg lifters out there. |

It's such a good idea to do that. Holly goes where ever she wants to right now and it's really annoying. We trained her to potty outside and that's it, last night she pooped right in front of the steps off the back deck!! I'm not crazy about running and grabbing the scooper every time she goes so I've been thinking of creating a designated area in the corner of the yard for her. That way we can keep it all contained. |

We were having that issue too. Especially if the weather was bad. But then we'd have to go "hunting"
For reference here is what our spot looks like. It's really not very big but it works. BTW the yellow "pee post" we bought isn't worth the $5 IMO. We added it when Marvin started to lift his leg but the tree is better. And don't mind our illegal ladder -- it lets us into the conservation area behind us.

I do agree that if you want to salvage your yard and have a designated area to potty thats great. But me personally I would want it within the confines of my own yard, not an area that he needs someone to physically let him into for him to go. Weims like most dogs like to roam around and enjoy whatever freedom they get especially if you do not have tons of property. I love the area shown in those photos above. We had the same type of things for our dobermans growing up.
