the length of your dog's nails?
I had someone riding my *bum* the other day about how Slade's nails are "way too short", that it "looks ugly" and that I "obviously don't know how long a dog's nails are supposed to be".
Just because I stay on top of my dog's grooming, and don't comform to the norm of 99.9% of the world's dogs having nails that are way too LONG . . .
I mean, really.
And for that matter, I'd hate to see their reaction if his nails were freshly done! They're due for the dremel in this picture! |

I'm not sure what they are 'supposed' to be, but each dog has different nail beds (correct me if I am wrong).
Chevy's are so long, and Hemi's are so short. |

That's fine - let them grow too long and then let your boy loose on their hardwood floors
That's ridiculous! It's amazing how other people think they are experts when it comes to your dog! I keep their nails trimmed all the time - Yukon's look super short and Lexi's are a bit longer. |

Some people are idiots and need to just keep their mouth shut, I swear.
I know when Holly's nails are getting too long...when she starts click-clacking all over my floor!! |

The best part? This was a texbook single, "cat person" (like the crazy kind), who's never owned a dog in her bloody life. |

Precisely. The common rule of thumb for correct nail length is that the nails shouldn't touch the ground when the dog is standing, and you should seldom, if at all, hear clicking on hard floors. |

| The length varies from dog to dog. The most important reason to keep a dogs nails trimmed is for the well being of the dog. Nails that are too long get caught on everything and split or are torn off. Both are extremely painful and can lead to infection. |

Michael loves keeping his nails trimmed and really even at what I think might be short for what I have seen Weims nails at Wrench will start biting at them and it's time for a trim....we use a dremel too after the first time he got his nails done at petsmart and A. The one girl had another girls hold him who was tiny and Michael kept asking if he could hold him or put him on a table or the floor and then yep, the girl dropped him...Michael caught him though....and B....they used a dremel that had been painted to look fancy...we bought a dremel on the way home. also the girl did 2 nails on each foot and still charged us the full $10! Not a lot of money but I expected my dogs nails to all be done.
When walking at first Wrench's two middle ones would rub down to nothing...and his paws would begin to bleed...after we had the little stray dog for a week and they played in the backyard and no walks for one week they grew back and since then, months later, they haven't worn down like that again on his walks which are also longer now too.
They are now kept about as short as the ones in your picture I'd say.
I heard, not sure if this is true though, that some show Weims nails are down to absolutely nothing.? |

A lot of show dogs' nails are quite short. Breeds that have square knuckles like Weims, Dobes, Boxers, etc. espceially, as their feet are so prominent. I've seen a few Dobes with nails quite a bit shorter than Slade's.
The quick will recede as you go shorter (gradually), so really, as long as you do it progressively, even a dog who starts with out-of-hand nails, can be trimmed back to almost nothing.
I just go by the rule of thumb I stated before. Don't touch the ground when trimmed, and don't "click" on the floor.
In fact, this website is really detailed, and pretty informative on the matter. It's geared to Italian Greyhounds, but the pricinciples, in my opinion, are pretty well applicable to any dog.

WHAT! There's no such thing as too short! LOL I am a nail fanatic altho my dogs' nails are not where they should be, but I DO obsess about them. And you should hear me with my puppy people, "dremel those nails!! A hunting dog is nothing without good feet! And the best way to ruin good feet is having crappy nails!"
Nails that are too long are a huge pet peeve of mine!! I started filing my puppies' nails from almost day 1 (almost daily) and strated them on the dremel by the time they were 5 or 6 weeks old.
There is a gal here in So Cal that has the top agility Weims and her dogs nails are always trimmed so short, I sit there and just admire away... LOL |

Also with Wrench's digging ( he actually only is in one hole that was already there, did fill it and since hasn't but...) his nails get pretty torn up from that and from walking if not kept short...the gradual is the key too because his quicks went straight to the tips at first. It also helps when he wakes you up by stepping on your face ( of course when you look up he's standing over you with those ears all cute like "mommy get up!")
His nails are more manicured than my own=)
Walter Wegmans pictures always seem to have their way too long...like touching the ground form most I have seen and I wondered if I kept Wrench's too short for awhile but....once you live with them you learn how they are and what is best. |

You're the same as me. LOL When I've freshly dremeled his toes, I have this sense of accomplishment, and spend the rest of the day admiring his nails.
I've even been known to then take a human nail file to them when he's passed out and I'm watching TV. |

How many times have I said that my biggest pet peeve is short stubby weim tails and long over grown nails!!!! Now you can see where I'm coming from. Working at the clinic I cut so many nails each day that disgust me at how long they are. The poor dogs have to walk on those!!!! In the show ring if the nails are too long the judges will say something. I had one say something to me once because I forgot and you know how short I keep faye's nails, the never of some people I tell you. You are doing an awesome job at keeping them short and well taken care of. Just you wait until you see some of the weims at the fun day. it will be hard to keep your mouth shut
We couldn't be more proud of you and the gerat work you are doing with Slade!!!!!!
