Anne, which dimple near his tail ?LOL I am looking at the pics and I am trying to figure out what I am looking for to disappear
He still has about half a bag of puppy food left that should still last him two weeks or so. I will switch to adult the next bag for sure.
The gas I was referring to? He doesnt have it a lot, but there are times when he can clear a room with the odour coming out his behind (vet said its cuz of the all natural food that human vegetarians also have rank smelling flatulence at times ... I'm a carnivore so I cant confirm this )
I threw some yogurt on his kibble this morning (I am assuming you guys meant to add it to his morning food and not give it to him solely) and he gobbled up the whole bowl in no time (normally his kibble sits all day and he grazes...does this mean he is really hungry...I feel so bad denying him but I know he needs to lose weight ) |

No it doesn't mean he's starving - it means he loves that yogurt! Mine used to graze too until I started giving them better food and additions, like the yogurt, green beans, etc. Now they stand at their bowl until it's all gone - then they make the rounds licking each others bowls
You might feel like you're starving him since you're cutting back his food. But just realize that you are actually adding years onto his life by cutting his weight down. Yukon always acts like he's hungry, no matter how much or how little food he gets. He's just really food motivated. I used to feel bad, like I was denying him, but I got over that pretty quickly, especially after he lost the weight and I realized how much better he looked.
You can also freeze the yogurt in a kong or in ice cube trays for treats. I add mine every morning with the kibble like you did. |

Anne~
Got a quick question....Vet has Wyatt on Puppy IVET food that they sell there at the office. Wyatt will be 8 months this week, and is growing like a weed.... I noticed that you mentioned in a post on this thread that you did not feed puppy food....when would be a good time to switch to the adult food? With our 2.5 year old Zane I remember switching right at 1 year of age...but it would be nice to be able to feed all the dogs the same food.
Any good advice would help??

Another stupid question out of me...forgive me
Does the yogurt HAVE to be plain? Can I give him the stuff I eat? Non fat or low fat flavours....I tend to stick to Vanilla but like cherry, peach etc. |

Zane and Wyatt's Mom,
You can stop the puppy food now. A lot of people never feed puppy food. I stopped mine at 6 months. |

Ask away..that's why we're here I don't give them the flavored stuff because it has too much sugar. And if you're using low-fat, then chances are it contains aspartame, which I don't eat so I won't let my dogs eat it either. If not aspartame, then another artificial sweetener, probably sucralose (Splenda). Xylitol is another artificial sweetener that is TOXIC to dogs, though I don't think it's common in yogurt. Either way, I don't want my dogs having any of the artificial stuff. I know some people on here have given their dogs flavored yogurts when they run out of the plain, which is okay, but I wouldn't give it to them all of the time. I give them plain, non-fat. |

Anne will know more about this, but just an FYI, I never fed my pup puppy food. As soon as we got her at 10 weeks she was on the same stuff my other two ate. And yes, it is nice buying only one dog food |

In the photo of him on the grass, there is a little "pudge" right at the base of his tail. It will look like a dimple sometimes, and if doesn't now, it will if he gains more weight. It's above the thigh muscle. Really, he is not that overweight from pictures I don't think. |

Yogurt doesn't have to be plain but the flavored kind often have a lot of sugar so I don't like to feed those.
I never feed puppy food. Some are OK, others are not, IMO. Some puppy foods change the ratio of fat to protein in order to reduce calories, so that people can still feed a lot. Less calories = slower growth. I personally feel that you should give balanced good quality food, but feed less, in order to keep a pup from growing too fast. This is why I feel that puppy food is a gimmick, it's to make people feel better as the temptation is to feed a growing puppy a lot, also the temptation is to like roly-poly puppies, which is not healthy. |
