If we have a meal that has rice I always cook a bit extra and serve it up to Ruby for her breakfast the next morning. She seems to like it.

We were told by our vet to feed Shadow rice when she was very ill and we were trying to build her up and get her to eat. So she got rice with corned beef or sardines and loved it. Didn't do much for her breath though!

Rice is safe. It is used in many dog foods and can be used to settle a stomach and firm up poos. A recent Dogs in Canada article on traveling with you dog had a great suggestion to bring the packaged cooked rice with you when you are traveling long distances to settle a upset tummy. The don't require heat or refrigeration so they are good in an emergency.

I have never heard of this before but a woman at the dog park who's dog has digestive issues said her vet told her it was ok to add puffed rice cereal to her dog's dinner whenever he had the runs. She keeps it on hand because it is quicker than cooking rice. Any one else heard this??

Wrench's poo's have firmed up a ton and it was needed since adding rice...we see the difference too if we go a few days without as I often do.

I like the puffed rice idea - never heard it before, but it's a good idea for travel. We use 1 tsp of canned pumpkin & some rice when the dogs have diarrhea.

I bought some ice cube trays & put a tsp of pumpkin in each & froze it - it can take a long time for the stuff to get used up. I also do that with my organ meat and fish. A full meal of fish is too much for Cooper's tummy. I just pop them out as needed or shove them into a kong.

I also like the Eagle Pack probiotics when the tummies are off.

Rice is very safe. With our first weim "Wilson" we had to cook his diet and that included rice and venison. Brown rice is very good for them. When we have a meal with rice and chicken, we always cook more for both dogs!! They Love it!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy [/url]

Are you talking about BROWN RICE strictly or white rice also? As far as I know, white rice has absolutely NO nutritional value at all. It's just a starchy filler. If you want to give your dog rice, I would suggest brown over white, unless the white rice is just a "treat".

While I was working as a vet assist in Hawaii we noticed that local people there ate a lot of white rice. By default they fed their dogs a lot of white rice. The vets I worked with began to see a correlation between some kidney problems and EXCESSIVE (meaning white rice every day) rice intake.

Simply because Hawaii had the type of population that may have fed their dogs exclusively white rice the kidney issue was identified. It was just anecdotal evidence and no one, as far as I know, researched or wrote it up.

Nutrionally white rice has no value. So as a normal part of thier diet I would avoid. However, it is very bland and easy to digest, so during times when your dog has an upset stomach or just needs a bland diet it is great. Gets them some calories and they usually like to eat it. Brown rice has a greater nitrional content, but tends to be "rougher" (more fiber) so if you are trying to settle the stomach stick with bland foods such as white rice, tofu, boiled chicken....

Otherwise, there is no need to feed your dog white rice on a regular basis.
