This may be a little off topic but.... Udo is my third Weim and the first one that was an eager eater. To get my first girl Heidi to eat, her majesty required buttermilk, cottage cheese and some canned food to go with her kibble. My second girl Schatzie was no different. We have also had Springer Spaniels at the same time and getting the right dry food was essential to avoiding all the skin problems and each were different, go figure. Right now both dogs are eating Purina One. They started on puppy formula and now that they are both 2, they are on large breed adult. Our vet sells Science Diet but Purina One is what he recommended for Udo and Augie.

In my experience I've found that alot of Vets don't know about the higher quality dog foods. I've seen many in my time and when I tell them what I feed they've never heard about the brands. I find that they are just like most people and only know about what's available in the large pet store chains and the grocery stores.

I had NO idea that Canidae was that affordable!

I am paying (i think) anywhere from 36.99 - 39.99 for a 40lb bag of Eukanuba!

I have to find a place that sells Canidae!

AmyB turned me on to a place--Pet Valu in White Oak, and if you have a MOMs near you, mine just opened up a Healthy Pet Store that sells it for a little more (but it's a lot closer). I think their website also lists stores that sell it, just have to call around for their prices! Good luck!

Not around here. A 33 lbs bag was $60 + tax a few months ago when I looked into it.

I mix in rice and tuna with Mia,s Kibble, that seems to make her poop less and its nice and solid. I also give her pasta sometimes.

I get the big bag of Canidae all life stages for $36.00/bg. I was really surprised that it was that reasonable. Jake's big bag of Wellness Core (no grain) is considerably smaller and $60.00/bg.

How many lbs is the $36 bag?

40 lbs. I was paying $43 dollars for Solid Gold Salmon Bison blend for a 33lb bag. Our Pet Valu wasn't carrying the Canidae at the time.

I just sent Bo's rescue an email asking if I could switch him back to Canidae. His skin and coat is looking bad.....

I was getting a 33lb bag of Chicken & Rice for $26, but it went up to $34. It's still a good price, though.

And alot of vets get free training from companies like Purina so this is why they tend to push some brands more than others. Nutrition isn't something that they spend a lot of time on while in vet school so many are unaware. After seeing the changes in my dogs because of a better dog food my vet started doing more research and decided to start carrying EVO and California Natural at her office.

Also, keep in mind when you're looking at price, that a higher quality dog food will last you longer because it takes less food to fill them up. I buy a 36 lb. bag ( $48 ) of Cal Nat once a month for 3 dogs (2 weims and a yorkie).

For those of you that live in MD & VA check out Whole Pet in Rockville MD at Gude Drive. I have shopped and called around for prices when Rocky was on kibble and when we first switched to Nature`s Variety. They only sell holistic / organic pet food and they have a wide majority of grain free diets! I have met the guy that owns the place several times and he is one of the most humble and nice people you will ever meet.
