We got Scout at 8 weeks old. On the fifth day, I had to go back to work. We had already let him sleep in our bed so he was alone and crated for the first time when I went to work that Monday. I could hear him crying from outside Crying or Very sad but I had to leave. By the time I got home for lunch he was sleeping. Same thing after lunch. I guess he cried less and less for the first five days.

Eventually he learned the name of his treats meant go to your crate. I used to give him Snaps. So when I would say "snappies!!!" he would go right into his crate and wait for his treats.

search "hooch came home.. help"..
extensive thread about a resistant to crate train puppy..
i will tell you that the first 6 weeks were very trying, but if you remain calm and indifferent, it will be easier on all of you..
leave the crate door open when you are home, try feeding him in the crate with the door open.. eventually progressing to feeding him in there with the door closed.. let him out when he is done.. lots of praise..
throw random treats in there when he is not looking throughout the day for him to find.. lots of praise..
just remember he is not hurting in the crate.. just protesting.. and NEVER let him out if he is whining..
Hooch is now 7 months old, and as soon as i say "go to bed" and flick his cookie jar lid.. he flies into his crate happily.. never thought i'd see the day.
good luck!

Awesome! Thank you! For some reason knowing that alot of other people had or are having the same puppy problems does help me rest easier at night...once I block out the howling, whining, crying, and all other noises that come from Marley and his crate!!! But anyway Marley woke up twice last night and after taking him out and putting him back in his crate he cried for like 5 minutes then went back to sleep. Today will be the first time he will be left all alone in his crate during the day...it should only be for about an hour I just hope he does not make too much noise!! I guess you have to start somewhere, wish me luck!!

you also might want to try treating him something "special" every time he goes in there.. Hooch only gets a certain "cookie" when he goes in the crate.. i call it "crate bait"..
it's apple banana and yogurt biscuits from wellness.
hang in there.. sometimes they need you to go slow. with hooch, we would crate him while he napped and sit in the same room.. just not make eye contact. it helped him settle. we left for 15 minutes, then 30, etc.. he's good crated now for up to 3 hrs during the day, and 8 at night..
good luck!

how long is too long to leave him there and how long do they usually whine, cry and howl before quietly staying in the crate while we are out???

Depends on the dog in both cases. Some will give up quickly, others will howl the entire time you're gone. Sorry. Very Happy
