| We are in the process of searching for a new dog food for Wilson. He is currently on Canidae chicken and rice formula but since he has been on it he has developed some skin issues. We have done some research and are considering Evo Large bites or red meat large bites or California natural. However the package says to be cautious to use with young dogs because of the high levels of calcium and protien. Wilson is 7 months old. Is he to young to be feed this? Which is better? |

We have been using California Natural for about 3 years and absolutely love it. Yukon had some skin problems (dry, flaky, red stomach, shedding, dry and cracking pads, etc.) which is why we switched in the first place, but now all of our dogs are on it. We started feeding it to our rescue when we got her at 12 weeks old and have not had any problems. However, the EVO has a lot more protein (43%) compared to Cal Nat (23%) so we didn't have to worry about her being so young. Both are great foods and are made by the same company. Cal Nat has the shortest ingredient list of all foods on the market, is hypo-allergenic and has just one protein, one fat and one carb. We feed the chicken and rice dry, but if you want one with no rice they also have a Herring and Sweet Potato that my dogs also like. we had many people notice the change in Yukon and couldn't believe it was all due to him eating a better dog food.
Here is their website http://www.naturapet.com
Just and FYI, the 36-lb. bag lasts us exactly one month for 3 dogs (2 weims and a yorkie) and we pay $48 a bag but I buy it at a vet's office. |

We are on the Innova large breed puppy formula which is made by the same company. I was told not to feed the EVO until they were two years old because of the high protein count. The place that we get it from also
sells California Natural.
I am thinking about switching him to the California natural to get him
off of the pupply formula. I know he is too old to be eating puppy
formula, but we cant get Canidae here and Innova is popular here
so we did that. Thanks Welches for the information. I agree also
if you go to their web site and ask for free samples, they wont send
you any free samples, but will send you coupons off on your next
purchase! I got a $5.00 coupon and a $3.00 coupon in the mail.

Working at a vet clinic I can honestly say that every dog we have had on Canidae has not done well at all on it. There are so many food out there and all you can do is try and see what one your dog does best on. I personally have tried tons of foods but kept coming back to the Proplan diets. Our pups have always done well on their puppy diet or growth and the adults are doing well on the Large breed adult. Our old man is doing awesome on the senior diet. So I'm not changing a good thing this time. They even have one for sensitive skin and stomach that may be a good option if your weim is starting to develop allergies. I'm not a fan of holistic diets or RAW. Seen to many bad things with both. I always like to say that reserve the all natural diets for if you ever have a HUGE allergy problem. If you go on thes diets and still have allergy issues you have nothing to turn to. Those are always the LAST resort in my opinion.
I know our dogs did TERRRIBLE on the Eukanuba diets so I stay well away from them. |
