Hello Guys, just wondering if anyone here feeds or has fed Innova Evo to a puppy. The bag suggests you can; giving instructions on feedig based on weight/age (as young as 11-weeks). I am a bit concerned about the protein content however, it is 42%.
Any opinions or testimonials will be much appreciated. |

I have heard from lots of people not to give EVO to a puppy. I would start with the regular puppy Innova, it's a great food, too.
All I can tell you is that it has something to do with higher amounts of calcium and other minerals that shouldn't be given to rapidly growing dogs--especially larger breeds.
Correct me if anyone knows differently.

| I was feeding it, but am now mixing it in with the puppy food. I think it was too high protein and my dogs always had loose poops. John said poops are much better now. Eventually they will get the plain Innova, not the Evo. |

I was told not to feed the EVO until they were two years old. Champ is on the Innova Large breed Puppy and he loves it. They dont sell Canidae
where I live, so we went with the innova. He will be two in January, and
we will switch him over. His poops are firm and he has a very shiny coat. |

I am only curious about this because Zeke started having digestive issues last week. When I got him from the breeder he was on Kirkland and I got him switched over to Canidae immediately. I had been feeding him Canidae for about a month without any issues. Along with the digestive problems, Zeke started to develop (what I believe were) hives on his back and tail. I assumed this was an allergic reaction.
I've been researching different foods/issues and thought maybe he was having problems with the grains in Canidae. What do you guys' think?
I would like to switch to a more natural, grain-free diet but am not sure I am ready to take the plunge into RAW. |

| We are having the same problems with Wilson. He has had the hives, loss of hair on his back, and in between his toes are sometimes red but not much anymore. He has been on canidae chicken and rice for sometime now. We Thought it might have been a grass allergy but im starting to think its the food. So today we went and got Califorina Natural Herring and sweet potatoe formula. Trying to see if its the grains. So hopefully this works. I dont know if that helped you or not. Just thought it was interesting you are having the same problems with your weim. |

Wow, sorry to hear it. I ended up going to the vet because he had a severe case of the "runs" last week. He even soiled his crate (TWICE) which was quite possibly the worst experience of my life.
The vet had me switch his food to a prescription-only meal that is supposed to be easier on his digestive system. He told me to SLOWLY mix in the food I will be switching to. I am just trying to decide which food to get him on. If he is having problems with Canidae, I definately don't want to keep him on it. Please let me know what your results are with the California Natural. |

Just wanted to share that we've had great success with California Natural. All 3 of our dogs are on it, but they also get home-cooked meals several nights a week. It was amazing the change we saw in our dogs after they'd been on CalNat for just a couple of weeks. More energy, shiny coat, better poo, etc. I'd also stay away from the high protein EVO until your pup is a little older. It's also a good food, made by the same company that makes CalNat. I think the CalNat protein is around 23% so we had our rescue on it as soon as we got her at 12 weeks. Here's their website if you wanted to check out more info. on EVO or the other foods from that company. http://www.naturapet.com It also has a dog food comparison so you can check out the foods side-by-side. |

Thanks Welches, I am starting to think that Zeke may have had two separate issues: a stomach bug and seasonal allergies. I just ordered "Fresh Factors" from Springtime Inc. I hope this clears up his hives/itchy skin. I am going to look into the CalNat. I also picked up some RAW patties from Nature's Variety. Have any of you fed this to puppies? |

I haven't done the patties, but ours are also on Fresh Factors. Yukon turned back into a puppy after he'd been on them for a few weeks |

| A few months ago my husband and I came home to find Trinity laying in the living room floor covered in fist sized hives all over her poor body. Her eyes were blistered almost completely shut and a rash all over her belly. Lets just say its a very scary thing to walk in and see your baby like that. Sounds like alot of you have been through this as well. We rushed her to the emergency vet and they gave her all kinds of steroid shots. We ended up at the vet 4 times that week. The wheels would subside then come back randomly. We shampooed the carpets and furniture and washed everything not knowing what she was reacting to. We changed her food to Evo and she loves it. Within two days the hives were gone and she has since lost weight and become more active. I will definitely recommend all natural food without grains or corn. It has worked wonders. Its a little expensive but alot cheaper than constant trips to the vet. |
