Alright H20, Anne and Dhondt...
What about breaking with Pigeons and Doves? There is the European Dove up here and the AZG&F wants them gone. No bag limit, open season...all year. (I called...)
So they would be just as easy to catch as pigeons and they flush just like pigeons too. They are the same size, if not larger than a White Wing Dove and they are larger than pigeons. Danni has pointed them in the trees so it's obviously a game bird to her.

Do you three think it would be beneficial to mix them up with the pigeons (while breaking Danni) to keep it interesting?

I wouldn't see a problem with it, especially if you can hunt them in the wild. Although, my so called Master Hunter decided Dove was fair game for her to not hold steady. She went in and snatch it right up. I'm not sure Dove flush quite the same, she had no problem catching it. Usually, you go dove hunting you sit in a chair and wait for them to fly into your barrel. Thats why I stopped going dove hunting. I didn't get any dog work from it and it was boring me after the thrill of quail hunting.

Teka pointed a wild dove when she was younger and it happen to be dove season and I was able to flush it and shoot it. But, she was steady ... had she chose to take it out she might have been able to.

They would probably be ok for release birds. Shoot to kill would be iffy. Doves tend to shed A LOT of feathers and will turn some young dogs off retrieving. If you do shoot to kill, try to shoot them over water and keep lots of fresh water on hand to let the dogs wash their mouths out.

I've often wondered the same thing...doves here are as common as pigeons. My advice is obviously don't shoot any bird that's not in season, and give it a try. I don't know if they would flush the same if they were in cover, but who knows.

I would only use them in launchers, same as most birds. Gives more control over the situation and guarantees a flush at just the right time every time.

I still think my main concern would be the shedding of feathers. I've had a couple of young dogs I trained stop retrieving birds. When they left, they were fine. Steady to shot and retrieving to hand. Found out they were taken out dove hunting with no water and started refusing pick ups after just a couple of birds. Took me weeks to get them back to retrieving and they never did get the enthusiasm back. They only did it because I wanted them to. I would use doves, but only if the dog had plenty of water and stop immediately if it started showing signs that it wasn't liking the feathers. Dove shot over water tend to not shed as bad and it gives the dog a little water work. Kills 2 birds with one stone so to speak.
