...until I changed his food ! The rescue brought over a very large bag of Eukanuba and a case of Pedigree cans and told me to start switching Bo over to this. I had him on Canidae and he was doing well. Yes, he was starting to thin out too much, but I'm a firm believer in taking things slowly, so I was gradually feeding him up. His weight loss was definitely due to the amount of exercise he was getting! That's a GOOD thing! Anyway, now he's on this food that is OBVIOUSLY not working for him, hence the poop-eating. AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
.......end rant |

| OMG please switch him back. Do some research and you will very quickly realize that the crap they gave you and told you to feed him is such poor quality compared to Canidae! I know there are different reasons why they eat poop but for us it was linked to nutrition and it seems like the same for you. |

| Oh trust me, I've done my research. Bo's my foster, and the rescue wants him switched over prior to being adopted out. |

| I know it's considered 'bad' but it's the only food that Chevy and Hemi have had luck with. I've tried everything, and I mean everything. They always had diarrhea and gas. Their stools look fabulous, and they have so much more energy. I think Eukanuba does them well. |

| i truly apologize, i did not mean to be so condescending. I have been through hell and back with Rocky`s diet so i am always so concerned when i hear stuff like this. I know very little about fostering but am i guessing that the rescue pays for the food and you just take care of him? If that's the case then it sucks, is there anyway you can maybe take the food they give you back to the store and use that money to buy Canidae? Do you a say at all where your new foster baby will go once ready? Will they allow you to be in contact with the family? I am just guessing and hoping that whoever decides to take him must surely love the breed and the dog, therefore they would want the best for him and would consider feeding Canidae. This is a hard situation to deal with because its very apparent he is not doing well on the new food. |

Hunter was a snacker on Eagle Pack with his old fam. I've got him over to EVO and he's not shown any interest.
Stinks that the rescue wants him on this.... stuff. Euk was what the boxer breeder I worked for for a while fed their dogs. Most seemed ok on it, but there were definitely some of the boxers that it didn't work for. |

I'm new to this site.
I have a 15 week old Weim, Dexter. I bought him from a breeder with over 40 years experience. He's had a lot of success at dog competitions, participates in genetic research for the breed with one of the universities. I've had reason to trust his opinion to this point as he's pointed out misleading information that Dexter's first vet gave me.
I was surprised to see how little positive posts there are about Eukanuba since this is what the breeder recommended.
I'm trying to make the best decision regarding nutrition, but also have to keep things affordable. What's the middle ground? What's the best way to approach this decision?

That's another boat that I am in as well. We aren't able to spend much more than $80 a month on food. That's about what Eukanuba runs. I feel like a bad dog mom at times, but I have tried many brands, and I think this one works well for my two. |

This is another touchy subject around here. This section is filled with info regarding different types of food, grading the food you feed, etc. IMO, it all comes down to what works for your dog (and you).
Keep in mind that vets and possibly some breeders get kickbacks for endorsing a certain brand of food. |

| I get the big bag of Canidae all life stages for $36.00/bg. I was really surprised that it was that reasonable. Jake's big bag of Wellness Core (no grain) is considerably smaller and $60.00/bg. |

I pay around $36 for a 40 lb bag of Canidae, which is about the same price I was paying for Natural Balance. ( I use the regular all life stages--it has better ingredients than the chicken and rice and it's less expensive.)
I still supplement with some yogurt and occasionally pumpkin. Their coats are nice and shiney too. All three of my puppies want to snack on my senior dog Kali's pooh--I have to run out and scoop hers up before they can get to it. They don't eat their own, each others, or anyone at the dog parks--only HERS! I got some pills iat Petsmart to put in Kali's food so they wouldn't find it appetizing, but they didn't help. So I yell, LEAVE IT, while I run to get the scooper, and hope I can make it before they decide to go for it. Sometimes I don't get it in time. YUCK!
But, until I find something comparable in price and quality to Canidae that works better for the dogs, they're stuck with Canidae!

That's what I pay too. It used to be $32 for a 40lb bag but the grooming shop where I buy it just went up to $36/bag for the Canidae. Hey, I'm definitely not complaining though. That is a very reasonable price to pay for a higher quality food than the crap you find a PetSmart. I haven't been to PetSmart in a while but I'm thinking that their brands like Euk, SD, Pro Plan, etc. run similar in price and some of the bags are smaller too....am I wrong??
I also use Solid Gold and EVO, rotating as each bag is gone, now they are pretty pricey!! Sometimes I wonder how I'm affording it. But to me it's worth it. I'd actually be afraid to put the same food in my dogs day in and day out.
Can't blame a person if it's not in their budget to buy great food for there dogs though. There have def. been weeks where my family has lived on just cereal and PB and J! |

I had NO idea that Canidae was that affordable!
I am paying (i think) anywhere from 36.99 - 39.99 for a 40lb bag of Eukanuba!
I have to find a place that sells Canidae! |
