Dear All

Hi, I'm really relieved to have found this site. I was smitten by the breed and my pup will be with me in about a month. ...he will arrive from Australia since there are no breeders here and by Singapore law can't travel until 12 weeks.

I need help for 3 specific things -
a) books that you think are great,
b) something like a checklist of things to get for pups since I am counting days until he arrives...
c) experiences and advice for cross country transportation....also what should I be asking the breeder to work on for me during this time ?

If you know where on the site I can find these, that would be wonderful ! If you can spare some time to guide me that would be even better ...

Thanks, Amrita

Hi and Welcome to the forum!
Congrats on your new baby, post pics when you can!!

As far as books go, I really like "The Dog Whisperer" books by Caesar Milan.
He has a lot of good ideas for training that work.

Stuff you may want to have ready when your pup arrives would be:
-a crate, have you thought about crate-training yet? The earlier, the better. It's my humble opinion that crate training when they are little is really the way to go. Getting your puppy comfortable in his 'den' (crate) will make life easier for you and safer for him when you are not home.

- Kong toys are great, they make puppy kinds too. It's a hard rubber that you can fill with treats, and it pretty much indestructible. Your puppy will want to chew.

Sorry, I can't really help you with the cross country transportation, are you going to pick him up or is he being delivered? I know more people will be along who are very knowledgeable.

Welcome and Congrats!

From a post of mine a few months ago:

SUPPLY LIST:

paper towels, floor cleaner, counter cleaner, laundry detergent, extra glasses (if you wear them), extra retainer(s) (if anyone needs one), spare sofas, loveseats, beds (your current ones will no longer belong to you, in fact, your new ones probably will not either), paper towels, large towels(to wipe off paws, especially on very muddy days), more counter cleaner, hell, get more paper towels while you're at it too, a dog-free apartment (if you have children, then get a kid-free one, too), blankets (to drape over the seating that he/she chews a hole in), stuffing for UNDER the blankets that are draped over the seating that he/she chews a hole in...

Did I forget anything???

Congrats on your puppy! How exciting!
We make a 5-6 hour drive with our Weim, Mona, a couple times a year. Our vet recommended a gently sedative to calm her down (she paces in the back of the car). We tried the herbal "Ultra Calms" but the dose for her body weight was a third of the jar and we didn't notice any difference.
Definitely work on crate training. Another great travel tool.

Oh, certainly if you're vigilant you can ensure most of that doesn't happen - she was being sarcastic. BUT, Weims ARE too smart for their own bloody good most of the time, so you DO have to stay on top of them, or they will find their own "fun".

I would definitely recommend crate-training, and not leaving your dog loose when you aren't home, to eliminate the chance for a crime of opportunity though!

Hi All
I went through pics of all your babies...and I am grateful to have found this home ! I also uploaded a few pics of Kaiser that I was sent (we have decided his name and since the breeder says he is the pick I'm guessing it fits!)...and some of his litter.....

Sydney is a 7 hour flight to Singapore and I will go and collect him at the airport. ...but am already getting stressed out ...still I've been suggested a couple of names for animal transportation. ....its quite something -- export licences etc !

When we went to see the pups in person at 4 weeks, I came armed with an I.D. tag with his name on it. The breeder called him by name from that point on. It was really helpful with training to get a puppy that knew his name and responded when called.
