I'm about an hour and a half from Buffalo, and 2 from Toronto (for legs 16 and 17) but I don't have a car big enough to accomodate three dogs (which I assume would be the split, as there are 9 dogs and 3 drivers requested).

Yeah, I'm close to Toronto too but my car is tiny. Confused I'll have to think about someone who might do it. I'll email the info to a few doggie friends.

I think it is amazing what these people are doing but I'm amazed how many dogs come North. There were 15 brought to the Guelph area after Katrina and I'm sure it's not the only place that got dogs. It just makes me wonder are our shelters not full as well?

It is my understanding that statistically, we have drastically less animals in shelters and rescue, than the crisis in the US. Look at all the Weims in rescue in the US . . . vs. the fact that you can actually be wait-listed to rescue a Canadian Weim.

I say we welcome the surplus with open arms, for as long as we can accomodate them.

I have mixed feelings about it. Since I know we still have dogs waiting in shelters who are statistics rather than family members. And having worked in these environments I feel for each of those animals. I am happy that in Ontario our most of our humane society's adoption rates are around 70% and I know the Toronto humane society is one of the best. I am not sure of the statistics for the private shelters. Even the decision to get Marvin from a breeder was a long process as all the other dogs I have owned have been the misfits from shelters.

Regarding Weims, the waiting list is only with the WAC rescue and you can find Weims in shelters and through craigslist, etc if you look. Also, the recent GreyGhost (Jan-Apr 2008) reported that "For several years now the rescue problem in Ontario has been increasing". As Weim popularity grows, I believe this issue may also grow if we don't keep on top of it. I am also happy that they noted that "If you are benefitting from our dogs by breeding or even just involvement in dog activities, please consider giving back to help the unfortunate Weims who no longer have caring owners" and "2008-9 Motion that a specific WAC member not be permitted to renew their breeders list privilege as they have been unresponsive to rescue situations - Passed". I wish they could name the breeder so people would now they aren't responsible.

Just my two cents - I do wish a loving home for ALL dogs.

I do know, at least in this situation, the rescue offered to take them.

I hope the legs are able to be filled... one rescue is able to take Weim mixes, which are harder to adopt out than purebreds. Two are on this transport...

Dang, wish I were close enough to help...
