|
|
I've been reading on here about various dry foods since I want to switch Molly's food to something more nutritious. I've read a few times here that when a dog is on a better quality dry food that they will poop less. I'm curious about that because in humans it's supposed to be more healthy to poop often, at least once per day. (And I'm sorry, I don't know how to more "eloquently" talk about this ).
So I'm wondering what the reasoning is behind feeding a dog more quality foods and how that should be better for them to poop less often? |

I do know that when you feed a high quality kibble they need less of it. The lower quality brands have more filler in them so it takes more of it to fill your dog up. Better food can also mean better stool.
So maybe less kibble =less poo? |

| That is a good point, that they need less amounts of higher quality foods. I'm guessing that with quality foods their bodies absorb the nutrients and there's less filler to expel. |

We want less poop because we hate picking it up its stinky, some dogs like to eat it and roll in it. |

| thats the idea, higher quality ingridients will be absorbed by the body and leftovers expelled, Uno only poops once, sometimes twice a day, one solid poo, hes on raw, grain free kibble, homecooked and some random ones like yogurt, soups, etc. |

| They should poop once or twice a day, usually after they eat. You want to see firm, compact poops, not big smelly mushy poops. If you can pick up the poop from grass and not see that there was any poop there at all, you've got some good doggy poops! |

| Since we started feeding higher quality foods (were feeding Beneful, starting feeding Canidae), we see firmer, less smelly poop, which is fine by me! |

| I feed raw! Rocky only poops twice a day and its nice and hard and very easy to pick up. Sometimes it even crumbles, especially when he eats lamb. Les poop means that their body is absorbing all the necessary nutrients so therefore there is very little poop. Mine eats 3 lbs of food a day and poops very little! |

| Thanks for all the advice! I've never heard of the Canidae food before I read about it here, I will be looking into that since so many here have such rave reviews about it. |

I can attest to better food=less poop!
My Gracie goes to daycare at my retired parents' house at least a few days a week. I have a supply of food at their house, but there are days when we all forget to put her food down. She eats Blue Buffalo Wilderness formula. My parents, in spite of my pleading with them to get better food, feed their chihuahua "Come 'n Get It" which is one of the worst rated foods out there. Full of corn fillers and other crap. Anyway, on days when Gracie eats that, she poops 4 TIMES a day!!! When she's eating her Blue Buff only, she poops only once a day and it is a very firm poop. Since being on the higher protein food she also has fewer anal gland incidents and less gas.
Get the best food you can and the difference in price is made up by them eating less of it. I am also convinced that my mom's chihuahua is prematurely old due to poor diet. Aside from wanting to clean up less poop, I just want to feed Gracie the best food I can so she's with me as long as possible!!! |

| Ok, yah I am def switching Diesels food! I got on here b/c I am fed up!!! I am a firm believer that you should always pick up after your dog.He was pooping once in the morning and once at night. I can deal with that but all of a sudden he is pooping like 5 and 6 times a DAY!!! He is on Science Diet and I thought it was a good food but now I dont think so as much. Dang it all too, I have tons still on hand. I am using it b/c I am cheap and then I will switch. That means I will be cleaning some nasty piles for a while! |

Take a portion of the SD to mix with the new food until your guy is used to it & donate the rest to your local shelter, they'll be happy to accept it and you can get Diesel on the new food faster. |

How often should a puppy 12 weeks poop?
I'm asking this because perhaps Gandalf is pooping too much. The food he eats it's ACANA puppy junior.
He poops just after he wakes up. An half hour later I give him breakfast and there is another poop just after that. Then during the morning we have a little present .
After lunch poop again and during the evening another present (looks like Christmas time...). Just after dinner another poop and sometimes before bed...
Is this normal for a pup?
What about for a 10 yo dog? Jesse poops 2 or 3 times a day ...

Yeah, i think that`s quite a bit..... How are his poops though? If they are normal, meaning hard and don't smell terribly bad then maybe he just wants to be outside and it could be that he has started marking. I have seen a few dogs mark with their poop....
As for the older dog, i think twice a day is good. If you have a lot of three times a day poop days then he might benefit from better food. |
