Forgive me for being blunt, but you decided you wanted a weim, a hunting breed, live with it. It is in their genes. They were bred to be hunters. That's what they do. You could probably break the dog, but most likely take a little spirit as well. [/code]

You could potty her on a leash I guess. Also since you don't like this behavior, be glad that she's 1/2 lab, nice soft mouth. Take it away from her gently (I'd praise but if you don't want her doing it, just take it away but don't be mad about it) and be done with it. You do kind of have to live with this based on the breed of dog you have.

i was very proud of her for getting the bird and for not killing it. i told her good girl and to release and she droped it. i just want to take to chance that she might run and go after something bigger and get hurt. And i do keep her on a leach. What happend was that she saw it and all i told her was sit and stay and she did just that till the bird moved and it felt like she tore my arm off to get it.

this is to h2owlkillr that wasn't blunt that was just rued i also have a choc lab full breed. so i know what the hunting breed can do i was just stating some that my lil 7month old pup did the other day all i asked is how do i keep her from doing i don't mind her doing but live n front of a very busy street and my fence isn't up yet all she did was get lose from her collier that she already knows how to take off on her own so even if i did have a good hold of her she would have still gotten lose.

My post wasn't meant to be rude. The post title " I can't believe she did this" led me to believe you didn't know why your dog would possibly want a bird.

The first thing you need to do to stop this behavior, is get a quaility collar and lead that your dog can't get off of, or get the fence up. I would also work very hard on obedience.

As for the actual stopping of chasing birds, there are several options.

The best would be whoa breaking the dog. Think of it as an e-stop.
E-collar don't say a word, just stimulate her everytime she's showing any intrest in a bird.
This may sound crazy, but tie a dead bird to her collar and make her wear it for a couple of weeks. She will develop a severe distaste for birds. Hound hunters have used this tactic for decades to stop the running of trash.

No, you don't have a problem. That lab has to have something to do while the weims hunt. Razz
