Forum Rules

1) Remember that behind these aliases and avatars are real people. Please be respectful towards each other.

2) Please understand that everyone, including children, will be able to see what you type. Please refrain from the use of vulgarities or anything else that would be considered inappropriate for young eyes.

3) Please do not talk about specific breeders on the forum. If you are a breeder, please don’t talk specifically about your kennels. This reduces the risk of libel and defamation issues and is for the benefit of everyone. It also reduces the risk of confrontations between breeders as well as advertising issues.

4) Please do not advertise dogs for sale on this forum at all.

I like to keep the rules fairly simple, if at all possible. Smile

GG,

Could you please clarify this rule. There are several breeders in this group, including myself. I know I for one have mentioned puppies I've bred. If I have broken the rules, I apologize..... I was not promoting the breeding as I only mentioned it after pups were sold, but in any case... It occurred to me after your pointed out Rule #3 in the a recent thread, that I wasn't sure of its meaning.

Thanks,

When I was participating in news/discussion groups, I continuously saw breeders being accosted. Someone would come across a site or a link for a breeder, and if they didn’t meet the standards of the group, all kinds of things were said. Now, it is very true there are a lot of backyard breeders out there with websites. But it wasn’t uncommon to see a lot of things being said about these sites or breeders that were complete speculation. The kinds of things I was seeing were huge risks for libel suits. Too many people were quick to make defamatory statements without having the facts to back it up, and that is a great way to get sued. This rule was primarily designed to nip these kinds of “breeder bashing” discussions in the bud.

Also, some people tend to use forums as their own personal advertisement. I have seen site and groups where people will post pictures of their puppies for people to oooh and awww about, then conveniently mention they are for sale. These are the kind of people that rarely participate until a litter is born, and then the cute pictures start to come up with prices discretely mentioned at the end. I didn’t want to see that kind of thing happen here either.

And, breeding is one of those things were people have some very strong opinions about how things should be done. Sometimes people can’t agree to disagree and things end up where two breeders are just trading insults about the other’s kennel.

This is what the rule is intended to stop. Most things you can ask or say can be done without being specific about a particular breeder/kennel. If there is something that can’t be stated without being specific, then it would be permissible. Again, the idea is to stop the things I mentioned above. If I see things headed that way, I will say something. Otherwise, don’t sweat the rules too much.

Just curious...this is a close knit group in several cases, do these rules apply at all to private messages (since they can and are sometimes passed on)? Also, would using your kennel name as your user id and then discussing your personal breeding procedures or opinions (or those of others) be considered a violation?

Just wanted to be sure Smile ...Thanks so much for this site and all the info and excitement it provides!!!

As always, people will come up with creative ways to do things they shouldn't do, and I will likely have to make decisions on a case by case basis.

There are situations in which you really have a need to be specific, then private message is much more appropriate than a public posting. However, when typing anything down, make sure it is factually accurate and not speculation. Keep in mind that just because you send a message to a specific person, doesn't mean they will keep it private. On top of that, should I ever be subpoenaed, I would be legally obligated to supply any requested information, including private messages.

I know there are more than several breeders on these forums that do a good job helping others without be a walking-talking advertisement, and I appreciate that greatly. But I would consider using your kennel name as your username or in your signature or anything else to prominently advertise your kennel would be in violation of these rules. I have very little time to monitor everyone's user names I am afraid. So if anyone is doing this, please feel free to send me a private message to let me know.
