Hello everyone! About 2 years ago I decided that I wanted to get a weimaraner. After giving it some serious thought I spent the last 2-3 months in search for a weimaraner and reading as much as I can about the bread. I have now purchased my first weimaraner and will receive her tomorrow at the airport. I was doing my last minute search on the web to find out the best way to get her adjusted to her new home when I came across this site and am so happy.

I've read the last question posted which has helped me with the crate training and I thank everyone that responded. I have been told now that sometimes dogs can be traumatized from the flight and would like to know if anyone has experience with this?

Also, I would like to know how long you guys recommend walking the dog daily in the beginning. She is 8 weeks old.

Thank you all!

Congrats! I'm picking up my puppy on Sunday morning! It's so exciting, isn't it!

I suspect that for the first couple of months you will not need to take your new pup on structured walks. In fact, excessive exercise can be detrimental to a young pup. Running around your home and yard (if you have one) will tucker out an 8 week old pup pretty good.

Also, you want to be careful what public areas you are taking your pup to, and try to avoid areas where possibly unvaccinated dogs may be (at least until he's caught up on his own vaccs).

Can't wait to hear how things go!

When my dog arrived, off the plane he was slightly older, 13 weeks. But, other than having to potty, he was fine. He came out of his crate and looked at me like "HI! WHERE AM I!? SOOooooo exciting!" I'm not sure if it was due to his socialization with is breeder, age, personality... combination therein.

I had rescue remedy to give him, which I don't know if it helped or not. He was just super outgoing. I'd say be ready with your leash and careful. If she's traumatized she may want to run away. Have yummy treats and water ready... some toys, etc. If she's acting fearful, don't praise/comfort her, just remain gentle and calm. I'm sure it'll be fine Smile

I agree with the post above me regarding everything else.

Have fun, can't wait to hear an update!

My pup flew in two weeks ago from across the country...and she popped right out, squatted on the ground, then started investigating. The yowls coming from the cargio area were killing me, though! She loves her crate and I don't think it was detrimental at all. Very Happy

I can walk her for a few miles with no problem...just don't force exercise on a young pup!

Hi guys,

I just recently adopted a weim puppy as well. His name is griffen and he is 8 1/2 weeks old. My bf and I are sooo in love with him already! He is by far the smartest puppy ive come across so far. Housetrained in two days and already playing fetch and pointing.

I am right now looking for a weim group in London, Ontario, Canada to meet up with other owners and socialize Griffen. I hope to see pics of all your wonderful pups and hear more!!

So glad I found this site Smile
