| Do your dogs do what I call the alligator snap? Schatze will look at me sometimes when she has to potty or wants something else and open and close her mouth. She is not being aggressive at all just snaps her teeth. It's quite funny actually... |

| I know exactly what you mean. Linkin does this when he's playing with other dogs. He snaps his jaw at them - not in an aggressive way. He does it so hard and it sounds like it must hurt his teeth, because it's loud. It's so funny! |

Sophie does that when playing too, to me it's th worst sound ever. It makes me think of the phrase, "Gnashing of teeth". It's creepy to me.
I think it's some primal fear to not like the sound myself, the whole eat or be eaten thing. It really makes me want to bolt at times. |

| I suppose too that all the soft mouthness of them has been bred out of them in the states...retrievers have much softer mouths but so far my experiance with weims is they are pretty hard mouthed...even worse than german sheperds! |

I'm no hunting expert by any means, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that if that were true as a rule to the breed, they wouldn't be hunted as much as they are. They do retrieve in the field as well. |

| We hunt our weims on birds so they are soft mouthed. However, I know that this was part of their training in the field. There are things that owners do, not realizing it, that can encourage a hard mouth, such as having your weim play fetch with a tennis ball. I don't think it's been bred out of them. |

| They were never bred as a "bird" dog to begin with. They were originally bred to hunt and TAKE DOWN large game in Germany, Deer and Russian boar. So the "soft" mouth of a bird dog is learned for them, Not instinctual. |
