| So, Bo joined us 4 weeks ago totally untrained after a pretty awful start to life. Since she has been here she has learnt sit, down, stay, no, how to walk on a lead (leash) and how not to wee on my hall rug! I have spent the last week searching the area for somewhere to take her for training classes as I would love to take her to the beach every day and have her walk free with me. However, after loads of research I have come up with absolutely nowhere local that does classes so it looks like I'm going solo. I would love some training tips from you guys on keeping Bo's attention on me instead of on other dogs, she gets VERY excited when she sees them when we are out walking and of course my concern would be that when I eventually let her free on the beach that she would ignore me and run off to other dogs. Also if anyone has any tips on stopping her from jumping up or putting her paws up onto people I would be grateful, she is a lovely dog and on the whole is so well behaved and makes me so proud of her everyday, if I could achieve these two things we will be able to spend the summer holidays on the beach lead free! |

how old is Bo? sounds like you are off to a great start!
you can get a very very long lead and go to the beach and make sure Bo will come when called before you give her free roam, but first try A LOT of times in a large fenced area and see what happens. slowly add more distractions, and see what she does. you may have to go backwards a few times, but it sounds like she will get it.. this is a hard one to train. make sure you have something particularly interesting to Bo to receive when she comes back to you... then eventually stop rewarding every time with a thing, ie..food, and just praise.. but still give an occasional treat so it will keep her guessing.. if Hooch won't come to me, i'll say, "okay, bye bye" and start running in the direction i want him to come to.. he will chase me EVERY TIME.. i don't remember who was the genius on the site that recommended this, but it is brilliant.
the jumping thing, if you do a search, or look in the obedience section, there is a lot of useful posts about that.. that one is still a toughy around here..
good luck.. |

| Went to the beach today with a flexi-lead...damn my girl is strong! Everything is great, she recalls to her name every single time until she sees another dog then she goes into play mode and tries to pull her mummy over to the object of her desire, we must have looked a sight, me trying to be cool, calm and collected whilst controlling my loopy weim who is leaping in the air and yelping to go and play. I eventually had to put her gentle leader back on so that peace could reign (and my arms could have a rest!) I'm determined that I am going to crack this one though so I will be back on the beach first thing tomorrow morning! |

One thing I did to avoid jumping on people at the door was keep cookies by the door & have each person give them to Cooper when they arrived if he was sitting. He still likes to rush the person afterwards...I just read a training book that said to toss the cookie over his shoulder back into the room to prevent that.
I've also noticed neither of my dogs jumps if they are holding a toy in their mouths, so maybe that would help you too. |

if i call him, and he stays put.. i say to him, "okay, bye bye" and run toward the door, or where ever it is i want him to come to, and he will follow me, happily. it's a bit of reverse psychology. there is a book called leader of the pack that i found to be a good training tool.. and this site is priceless. |

| I also do the bye,bye thing and I have taught them when I say bye bye, it means you are coming or I am just leaving. I'll get in the car, turn it on, etc, which will freak them out and they always coming running. |

| Thanks for the tips, I shall certainly be trying that when I eventually let her off lead (which may be a while yet on yesterday and todays evidence!) |

I'll have to test this one with weim... my cockers, specially the youngest, the most stubborn I know, don't care at all.
hate when he does it!
I already tested with him, get in the car, turn it on and actually go way (a round in the neighborwood) and he keeps as nothing happens...
stubborn!!!
I hope my new puppy wont be like this otherwise I'll go nuts
