We have been using a halti on Ruby for about a week and a bit now and she is walking wonderfully - she's getting stronger every day and it was getting more and more unenjoyable taking her for walks because of her pulling. We've been doing loose lead training but sometimes I just want to take her somewhere nice!!!
My question is, how do you wean the dog off the halti? Once we take it off she pulls like a trooper.. she recognises that if she doesn't get the pull on her mouth she will pull away!!
I know it's early days with it, but is it possible to get them off it? (I hate the look of the halti!) |

Hi It's early days yet. I would give the halti a little longer.
This is how I weaned mine off it. I put the halti on but connected the lead to their normal collar and went for a walk. If they pulled they got corrected. If they continued to pull then I calmly connected the lead to the halti. They sharp got the lesson that pulling meant the halti got put into use. Takes a while but it worked for us
I am a great believer in halti collars. I feel that apart from the obvious uses, they get a dog used to wearing a muzzle. Hope my dogs never need to be muzzled when at the vets through injury and pain. but at least I know they won't have the added stress of the muzzle being strange.
good luck |
