how to Train not to cross the road

Does anyone have an idea's on training weims not to run across the road if they see a cat/person/dog.I have this problem out the front of my house with Busta, she does not cross the road if their is no distraction & she is great on her recall with distraction at the park.

But I think out the front of our house its a territoriel thing, as she barks what seems like aggressivley at people but eventually susses them out & its all cool. She will also bolt if she see's a cat which is very frightening.
I don't let come out the front anymore off lead.

I would really like to have the confidents to check the letterbox through the day & for Busta to come out the front with me, I do fortunetley live on a quiet street.

I also would like to have her controlled in all enviroments as down the track I'm interested in doing TV & performance work with her

I guess what I am asking for is some tips on trying to get a strong recall in any situation..

i trained schroeder to sit and wait in front of doors until i release him. he's never bolted out the door from a sit.

Hi RK, how is he though when he see's a cat, duck etc.
Does he still have the same control?

I thought Busta had a strong recall untill it was tested to the max.

i have a cat. i test him around my cat. you can also test with things are very tempting...i still test him periodically by standing between him and the open door. if he looks like he's about to bolt, i shut the door and make him sit back down. you should try training/testing busta that way. also, have her sit EVERY time before you go out. that way she learns it's a privilege to go out. it sort of goes hand in hand with NILF which i've done with schroeder since early on. it's the same deal in the car. schroeder does NOT leave the car until i tell him it's okay.

Thanks RK, I guess I get a bit lazy at times & give up on training while I do things like let Busta out the car & ley her through doors. Thanks for the help Smile

I have taught Riddick "sit wait" and "stand wait", if we are walking along and getting ready to cross a busy street I tell Riddick to wait and he stops where he is and waits for me to release him. The same is true if we are opening doors, getting in and out of the car, etc... He still has moments were he gives into temptation (cats and squirrels), but we haven't been doing this "wait" thing very long and he has picked it up really quickly.

If you're really concerned you might look into putting up a fence. If that's not an option maybe an invisible one. Do they have those in Australia? Training is required, but I know many dogs have picked it up quickly. I think they even have more humane ones with a citronella spray instead of the shock collars? But I could be wrong.

Thanks for the idea Emily, but I'm in a rental house & I'm not really into those invisible fences.

I think I will just keep her inside when I check the letterbox. And prectice at the park with a long lead & prectice the NILF training.

Thats great Heather about teaching Riddick the wait commands, I will be sure doing lots of work in that area with Busta aswell.

IMO it's best not to take chances... Good idea to keep her inside when you check the letterbox. My dogs are also trained not to door dash from the front door or the car, but I don't take chances, I will never say that they are 100% trained on this and wouldn't take after a cat they spy out in the road or whatever.

A comment on invisible fences with citronella spray. IMO if you are going to do something like this, or even use a shock collar to teach boundaries, you might as well shock the *&@) out of the dog the FIRST time they try to cross the boundary. It's far more effective to teach them stuff like this (and livestock chasing, or snake avoidance, etc.) with a STRONG negative, to extinguish the behavior for good. Often when the initial shock (or negative consequence) isn't done strongly enough, the dog figures out ways to get around it, or you have to repeat many times. I only recommend this type of thing for things that can kill a dog (again, like livestock chasing or snakes).

I persoanlly would never have an invisible fence, I know many dogs that will accept a shock in order to get something outsdie the fence, and of course you can't prevent things from coming in. Also some dogs do benefit from not being able to SEE temptations outside the fence (barking).

well i think that you should train your weim by well if you live near or in a coldisack you can practice training it to cross when you tell it to :D

Sounds like a great example of why you should whoa break a dog whether or you hunt. Properly whoa broke, a dog will stop and hold until released. In the hunting world it is used to reinforce a point or a back, but it would work well to stop a dog in its tracks that was chasing or going where it wasn't supposed to.
