Here is my boy Turner. He's from Top-Hat Weims near Folsom, CA and now lives in San Diego. Turner is an agility dog very near competing level. He's 2.5 yrs. old. He loves to swim, can fly like the wind to chase down a Frisbee and just caught his first rabbit yesterday.
I don't know if it's just me, but I cannot get this dog to not pull when we are on a walk. Any tips would be appreciated or feel free to commiserate!

Welcome to the site.
Turner is very handsome!
Have you tried walking him on a harness? When my kids take my weim out for a walk they use the harness and she doesn't pull at all, but if they take her with the collar on she pulls
Works for us. |

| Welcome! I love prong collars. No matter what my dog sees, she only pulls for a second then remembers how it feels and stops. My male can pull right through it though and not care. With him, I stop walking until he stops pulling and if he doesn't after like twenty seconds, I take a step back. There are also other training collars out there and non-pull harnesses. I know lots of people love haltis, but I haven't tried it. |

Welcome! My rescue dog "came with" a harness. Her previous owner loved it. I never tried it. It was too complicated for me. I used the prong collar, which worked extremely well, until I started working on obedience with her. Now we use a small, lightweight training collar that is similar to a choke chain except it clasps on around her neck, rather than slips over her head. She still tried to pull sometimes, but a quick correction usually stops her! Good luck!

Welcome
I too use a prong collar on both my Weims. I know that some Weim owners have had no luck with them and tried other things like the Gentle Leader or the Halti or a harness.
I think you have to try and see what works best for you and your Weim. |

Thanks for all the welcomes. I have the prong collar and the small show choker (named after someone but I forgot) and I can keep him from pulling too much. I just want to get him to that respect level where he walks beside me and can be trusted to not try and take off to greet a dog or rabbit on the other side of the street. Maybe I'll try the halti collar.
Thanks! |

| Dave - The best thing that worked for us was how we trained him and how we carried ourselves on the walk. Yeah, we have a prong collar, but that alone isn't enough. We also tried the gentle leader and the no-pull harness but didn't like them. Chokers are bad for their wind pipe - it can get crushed. Seriously, take the advice of the Dog Whisperer when it comes to the walking. It totally worked for us and our wiem was 8 years old when we did it. We're also doing the same thing with our 10 month old. It's really all about making sure you are calm and assertive on the walk, correct them the proper way every time they start to pull and be consistent and patient. Our first few walks weren't really walks at all. But it has so paid off! Now we can walk with 3 dogs, all on a slack leash at our side and without trying to chase things. |

| I've stayed with the prong and he is improving. I will work hard on the dog whisperer approach over the next few weeks. And YES, The rabbit chase was quit the scene. He worked hard, chasing him from one side of the yard to another, through bushes, etc. Rabbits don't have as much stamina as wiems! |

I think all weims are genetically programmed to pull! And I guess if they aren't more interested in nosing around than in me, the prey drive and nose aren't where I want them!
We've had luck with prong collars, but I actually prefer the nylon slip (show type) collars for walks and most training. Thing with them is, you still have to teach the dog not to pull. Get your leash and slip collar, take the dog out, and as soon as he hits the end of the leash give him a good, hard jerk that will actually get his attention, then go the other direction. None of this tugging stuff, a good pop that means business. He might yelp from the surprise. From then on, do not let the collar get tight. You want a tight collar to mean stop. It may be a slow walk for a while, and mentally exhausting for you to try and keep that collar loose. You can also say "easy" as the leash starts to tighten. I also have taught a good "heel" command, but I don't really want them heeling on all our walks.
I have two terrible pullers, who actually seemed to forget that I'm attached to the leash. I've had luck transferring it to their buckle collars, too, and can give them an "easy" and they lighten up on the pulling.
No good shortcut ideas, unfortunately!
