1 year old sore rear hips

Baxter has just recently started to show signs of his rear hips being stiff in the morning exiting his crate. This soreness/stiffness lasts about 2-3 minutes and he then seems like hes ok. Baxter has never been an extremley active dog and now no longer chases the laser light up and down the stairs.

Baxter never squeels or moans due to discomfort, just external signs of stiffness. If he does have hip displacia is there relief other than surgery that will give comfort the rest of his years?

I would put him on a glucosamine/chondrotin/MSM supplement. Is he an older dog?
An x-ray would show HD, but I was just talking to my vet about this as Maddie is stiff....
She puts all her dogs on Adequan shots at age 7. This is a nutriceutical more or less.
With RIley breaking his toe and developing arthiritis in the toe, he is on Dasuquin with MSM (glucosamine supplement) and has had a few Adequan shots, he is doing VERY well, running for 1.5 hours now.

Fresh Factors is another supplement that a lot of people with older dogs use.

He's only 1 year old? There are lots of joint supplements out there. You can see what works for him. You could ask your vet about NSAIDS. I like derramax. I have an HOD puppy who takes it as needed. It works well.

have you had him checked for pano? one year seems to be a point where they develop it if they're going to....

Pano is a growth disease esp for those dogs that are growing too fast. They have pain in the growth plates and they may limp. He's at the right age for it.
An x-ray may reveal whether he has it or not.

BTW...this disease is VERY difficult to read on an X-ray! I worked as an assistant for a vet, and I remember that anytime we had someone come in and they suspected pano, it would take all five vets and at least an hour of "pondering" for everyone to concur with the diagnosis...hopefully, your vet is experienced in reading X-rays for pano...if he/she isn't, have them refer you to someone who is Wink

I had a mutt dog before that was half Germain shorthair pointer and 1/2 border collie..one day at around 4-5 months old he woke up just paraluzed and in so much screaming pain...the day before perfectly fine and never showed stiffness signs or anything!

We rushed him to the vet ( this was about 6 years ago) and our vet told us that he had HD as well as another bone disease that was dense bones...you could see how hollow they where on the x-ray...he also had the elbow dysplasia or something...cna't remember names and all.

Well, he was about 5 months old or so...the vet said to feed him less protien because he was growing so fast was a major problem....he said move him to adult food and actually suggested Nutra.

Then we also had pain meds for him for the first week until that settled and we started massage on him too.

He soon regained his front movement back and would drag himself aorund and be in no pain ( after the first week no pain meds either) and then before long ( about 2 months) he had all movement back and could walk...he had a few bouts here and there when he would lose his back legs again but by the time he was 1 year he was totally over it...our vet had said he preffered doing all that then doing a $5,000 surgery ( that was just for his back hips) but that ( the diet change and massage) also all took care of all his 3 different bone problems and not just his back hips. Our vet saw him regulalry and was able to see x-ray progress as we went along, so we knew that time was making it better even though it took about 1/2 a year to be completely better ( Cole is now about 7 years old and never has any problems from what I have heard...ex has him)

Also our vet was amazing ( I can't even remember where we took him now...it was in cali and I think it was bellflower vet hospital maybe, not sure) and really showed us indetail and explained his x-rays each time...he saved us a lot of money and helped us with what our dog really needed instead of just going for the surgery...which we where more than ready to do and asked a few times if we just shouldnt' go for that. At the pup's young age our vet also thought that with surgery he would need more again later in life..and now at 7 yrs old Cole is fine so far.

I keep an eye out on Wrench's hips and I massage him already just to help him feel better, I watch for any stiffness and Nutra puppy doens't have too much protien...which is why that vet had moved us to nutra adult for less protien for a very fast growing puppy...he said that some puppies grow much too fast for all their joijnts to keep up and Wrenhc is already growing way fast!

Also, Wrenhc loves to leap over things and off the couch and all and I am so afraid of him breaking soemthing or causing hip problems so I am just trying to be preventative by massage and watching he doens't get too much protien...

Protien is the same with humans...people think the more the better which isn't always true...too much can can cause problems...with humans we can actually only absorb a cvertian amount so our body itself regulates that for us, with dogs it doens't so much and people want bigger badder dogs when really...our weims will get big enough without making them steroid lookign dogs....so ther eis no need for like 50 grams of protien.

Just learn what is enough and what is too much and what works best for your dog as each are different ( I had another Akita mastiff mix that needed extra protien before too).

I would watch and see if he does this each time or at leats the majority of the time...he may have just sletp bad ....and then talk to yoru vet ( I often get really amazing info from the vet receptionists actually...currently I have one who has worked in the same place for 20 years and has also had weims ) so I have gone in and tlaked to teh vet receptionist without even rbinging my pup in....easier to ask questions instead of a hurried vet sometimes too...but I also always go over things with my vet and am sure that if I feel I am not getting my questions answered or feel rushed out the door that I stop and tell my vet that I really want to talk these things over and to be sure to shcedule extra time for me on my visits. I do the same with my own doctor visits too.

Also...keep a journal of your dog....each day they are stuff and when and what time and why and how....food being fed and what amount they ate that day...all thigns really...even down to training or how they acted with a certain dog or kid and so on...it really helps.
