I've read that thread a few times but I don't think it's fair to discount all (large breed) puppy foods because there are some decent ones available out there.

guess we'll just have to agree to disagree Razz

My pup is on Science Diet Large breed puppy. Might not be the best food, but it works best for his belly. We went through a lot of holistic foods and they all upset his stomach. He does get yogurt, fruit, veggies and marrow bones though. Whatever works best for you and your puppy! Very Happy

i have always used iams for both dogs and nver had any problems. i took the ingridients to few vets to have different opinions because of what i read and i thought some othe ingridients wern't good. all the vets i talked to said that iams is a very good food, and when we read about ingrdients that are not good for your dogs, we have to read the specifics well. so i continued with iams. my dogs are both 3 years old and they are healthy, their coat is shiny and their poop is perfect, so i think i am going to keep up with this food. i am scared to change now.

Every dog is going to be different and different foods are going to work better than others. For my two dogs my biggest concern is that they develop at a normal pace and are getting the very best I can afford to give them. If I could feed them both Raw all the time I would and eventually I might once I get a freezer I can stock it all in and buy in bulk.

I had them both on Science Diet for a while and they didn't have issues with their poo or gas for the most part however after researching the ingredients and diving more into my schooling on Natural Animal Health Care the long term effects of a grain based kibble diet is something I personally want to steer away from. Every dog is different and some could eat the same amount of the same food and live to be 18 while others might develop health issues at 8. My dad has lost three dogs in the past 20 years at very premature ages and all of them were always on kibble and the vet was constantly having to switch their diets to try and assist in their healing but in the end it didn't matter. My dad could just be cursed with sickly dogs, too. It's a complete unknown as to why it keeps happening to thim. I think all of us on here are just trying to do what is right for our dogs and it's great we have this forum to bounce ideas off each other.

I am picking my puppy up next week and I was deciding on the following:

In order of how I was leaning

Wellness Large Breed Puppy
Solid Gold WolfCub Puppy (large breed)
Innova Large Breed Puppy
California Natural Puppy (they don't make a large breed puppy)

Any input?

FWIW, I'm in the same predicament and have been going nuts trying to figure out which puppy food to feed. I even went as far as to compile a spreadsheet of dry foods I was interested in. Rolling Eyes

I was considering WolfCub until I took a closer look. I normally look at what I consider to be the "main" ingredients. This is very subjective, but I stop once I see the last carb or fat source and consider that the main ingredients. I assume those ingredients make up at least 75, maybe even 90% of the food by weight--maybe it's the cynic in me... Anyway, in the case of WolfCub, you have two proteins first on the list then followed by four grains. The first ingredient (bison) is wet, not dry weight, meaning it's not really the first ingredient on a dry basis, which is key because the other ingredients (in this 'main' list) are dry. It probably doesn't make it into the main ingredients list.

In my spreadsheet, I rank foods based on this protein to carb "ratio" in the ingredient list and assign points if a food has a fruit or veg in the top 10 ingredients or several in the top 20. A point if they have multiple probiotics in the middle of the ingredient list, not the end. Half a point if they have glucosamine/chondrotin, etc.

Long story short, WolfCub scored pretty low using my rating system because of the lack of protein/excess carbs, the fact that fruits and veggies were so far down the ingredient list (they start after thyme, dry parsley flakes to name a few!), and lack of probiotics. In fact, the other Solid Gold foods I had in my list (Hund-n-Flocken and WolfKing) were right there with WolfCub in terms of rating poorly. The exception is Barking At The Moon, which actually scored really high (b/c of the high protein content, ingredients-wise). The quality is evidenced by the price as it retails for about $10 more per 33lb bag than the other three.

FYI, puppy foods that scored high for me are Innova Puppy (not large breed), Artemis Puppy (med/lrg breed), Merrick Puppy Plate, and Wellness Puppy, in that order. Hope this helps.

P.S. Anyone who's been using WolfCub and found it to be good, please do tell. This is my own scoring system--I've not actually used WolfCub before.

We were on Canidae until they switched formulas and Jager stomach could not take it. Not only did he get bad diarrhea but after 4-5 days he stopped eating it.
I recently switched to Innova and both the puppies are eating it and loving it.

OK Here is what I feed and the reasoning behind it.

I feed Eukanuba PRemium Performance (Sporting Dog). I've been feeding it for years. I've had dogs living to 15 yrs. old eating it as have fellow club members. Eukanuba has some of the best research for dog nutrition in the world. Most of the "premium" dog food companies don't do the amount of research into animal nutrition that they dog or else they use Eukanuba's research.

If you are going to feed puppy food PLEASE feed large breed food. Many of the "Premium" brands do NOT have large breed formulas. This puts your dog at a risk of developing Panocytitis and/or Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy. Both are painful diseases. Pano is caused by too rich a food and HOD can be caused by pushing growth too fast by using the wrong foods.

For years I have been feeding Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy food until pups are 10 weeks of age. After that they are fed Eukanuba Premium Performance. New research by Eukanuba is now confirming that this is a correct feeding policy. I learned of this from my mentor and the vet that I use is the one that told her of this. He's been in practice for many years and has treated many dogs with HOD and Pano over those years.

I've had two pups that I sold who have developed Pano. Both of these buyers didn't follow the policy. When one of them was taken to the Orthopedist he told the buyers to get him off of the puppy food. This pup had been fed Wellness puppy food.

People comment on my dogs' shiny, thick coats. I don't have skin issues with them either.

CherrystoneWeims, just so I understand, you're saying you're supposed to feed puppy formula until 10 weeks of age, then go to lrg breed adult or lrg breed puppy food?

No start with the large breed as soon as pups are weaned. (I'm a breeder so I wean them). When pups are 10 weeks of age switch to a high quality adult food.

Gotcha, and why regular adult food and not large breed adult? Is it just from your experience or is there something about large breed adult foods that are bad?
