This past weekend Scout finished her Open Jumpers with Weaves title. She had a clean run and finished 1st in the 24 inch class. Open is the intermediate class and JWW includes tunnels, jumps and weaves. She competed in excellent A on Saturday and we came close but had one refusal and none are allowed in excellent.
We also competed in Novice Fast for the first time and she qualified with a first place finish on Saturday. In the Novice Fast class dogs have 32 seconds to accumulate 50 points by completing the obstacles. The time is not visible so you have to try to figure out how much you can do in that time. There is also a "Send" where the handler cannot cross a line and must handle the dog at a distant. It was really fun.
Unfortunately Scout has developed some issues with the pause table and I think we might be stuck in Open standard for a while. |

Congratulations on your Open title! FAST IS fun isn't it!! However,we only need one more leg for our OF and I've seen some pretty tough 'sends' in Excellant. Maybe we'll stay on Open for awhile just for fun! Hhhhmmm, problems with the pause table, huh? Interesting, because that is exactly what our problems have been with. That kept us out of EX for a good 2 years! What is it Scout is doing at the table, cause chances are we've been there, done that!! [/quote] |

Yeah, no kidding. I think the sends in Open look hard! You guys must be really good!
Scout's table problems started a couple of trials ago when a judge approached the table to get a better view and I think it freaked Scout out (She is a very timid dog). Now she gets on the table and won't even look at me. She just looks around a whines. I think she is looking at the judge or just seeing what there is to see. I can eventually get her to sit but a down is out of the question. I built a table at home and have retrained her to do an automatic down which she does flawlessly at home and at practice. No luck in the ring though.
In her second attempt this past weekend she off coursed to the table from the start line! Then she was really confused because she thought she had done something great and I made her come back.
I have started having people in practice act like they are the judge and approach the table and count loudly to try to desensitize her. Now that it is getting warmer I am going to start taking her table places to practice where there are a lot of distractions.
Any advice would be great! |

Congrats Stacie!
I'm sure Scout will overcome her table obstacle. -Just keep thinking positive thoughts and baby steps! LOL! (That's what I do when Danni develops certain issues... ) |

WeiMe,
Sounds like we had the same problem, but for different reasons. Packer would also get on the table and not look at me, Or she would get on and jump back off, she even went UNDER the table one time! She also would do it perfectly at home and at class, but not at a trial. She just doesn't want to stop once she gets revved up on course and I think she knew I couldn't MAKE her do it at a trial. Some things to try at a trial are Making her down(you get whistled off), taking her off the course, by-passing the table for a few trials, let her get on the table-tell her how good she is(don't ask for a sit or down) and go on. These have worked for some, not for us. Here's what worked for us- at the trial, I let her get on the table and I just stood there with my hands behind my back(I tend to wave them around too much) and calmly and quietly said 'Packer sit'. When she looked away or acted like she was going to jump off I said 'No,sit'. I was prepared to stand there for the whole time limit if I had to. After what seemed like forever with everyone watching, she finally looked right at me and slowly sat. After that she started getting better at trials. She still tests me once in a while though. I still use the same stance with my hands behind my back, so she knows I'm not giving up no matter how long it takes. I know how frustrating it can be! I think what you're doing with people acting as judges and taking your table to different places is good, especially if she is timid. Also, if she off courses to the table(yes Packer has done this, too) don't make a big deal of it, I would just say "GOOD TABLE!" ""Let's Go! next obstacle. I don't know if any of this will help, I just know what you're going through and how frustrating it can be, you just have to figure out what works for her.
Good Luck, keep us posted! |

Thanks bluepup, Yes I have made her lay down and I was whistled off and then no improvement at the next trial. I will definitely try your suggestions! I think advice from other weimaraner owners is the best since we truly understand each others pain |

I think you are so right! I've had so many people say they think I need to get tougher on her when I've had issues. Well, that totally backfires and she shuts down on me. I've found I have to be totally upbeat and happy about everything and not let her think she has done something wrong. If she does something wrong on course(or more likely, I do) I've learned to make something up and keep going like that was the plan and finish all happy! She's my first Weim ( I had a GSD before her) and it has been quite the learning experience! I wouldn't trade her for anything! |
