| Do you have Weim Ways? In it, it tells you how to determine the length, but I can't remember what it said off the top of my head. I'd have to look at it when I go home. I do remember that there was a picture of puppy tails that had been cut off from the same litter and they were all different lengths and the picture was illustrating that you can't measure by length that each pup would have to be docked differently. |

I have been told two methods for determining how long the tail should be. I have had litters done both ways and have always had more accurate results with the second method. the first method is to pull the tail down and judge how long the tail should be by docking at the point where you can see between the pups legs. This usually leaves about a third of the tail and works on some pups better than on others. The only litter that I had done like this turned out well except for two puppies that were chubby as pups but became lanky as adults. Their tails were both about two inches too long. My preferred method is the 2/5's method. This method calls for you to dock off approximately 3/5's of the tail meaning that every pup should be measured separately to get the best length. This seems to be the more accurate method with my dogs. This is just opinion though. The best thing to do is to simply make sure you are getting the docking done by a vet who has experience with properly docking this breed or others like it.

Duchess has a very short tail.. Yep, I took the tape measure and it is only 3 1/2 inches long. The vet here doesn't have a clue. So, when the breeder had her second litter I told her to tell the vet to do it right and make them the length they are supposed to be...well those were all to short as well.
I was told that she could not be shown because her tail was way too short and she would be disqualified. So, needles to say, I didn't even try. But, it is o.k. She is a champion to me. |

| She wouldn't be DQ but it may go against her a little, and it probably depends on the judge just how much if at all. |

Tail length is a man made fault and is not something that would disqualify a dog. Any judge that would mark the dog down for a man made fault is someone I would never show to... |
