Could someone please help me. Yesterday a woman told me I would be unable to show Keisha as she has a white patch on her tail where she was docked. Could anyone tell me if this is true or if the woman had no ideas other than the white on her tail she has no other white on her.

Scout has a white(really light grey) tip on the end of his tail. While I do not show Scout, my breeder didn't give any indication that this would prevent me from showing him if I wanted. He has white spots behind his pads on the bottom of his feet and she said this wouldn't be considered a fault either. I don't think it would prevent you from showing her though. I'm sure Anne has some clearer advice on this though! Best of luck!

If I remember correctly, white on the tail where it was docked is considered an injury and should not keep you from showing at all.

Well I had to look up the UK standard, which says:

"Occasionally they may have a white mark on their chests, this is permissible, as are white scar marks resulting from injuries. "

So if the white is caused by the docking, it should not be penalized. Now a "white patch" sounds a little different from docking trauma? Can you post a photo?

I have a question that is kind of related to this whole tail docking... does anyone elses weim have a bald spot at the tip of their tail where the hair doesn't grow from the docking? And also both Riddick and Schroeder have spots on the tops of their tail about and inch from the tip where the hair is worn off (about the size of a dime) the skin that is showing is not red and I never see him scratching it. It just seems strange that they both would have it in the exact same spot and it looks exactly the same on both dogs... any ideas?

Yep, Anjs's tail has a bald spot right on the tip. It is hard to see because the hair above seems to grow down & cover it. Sometimes the hair grows down too far, so I trim it. I don't want her to look like she's got little wisps off her tail! :-)

That is normal, most tail tips are bald like that but covered with hair so it's not too noticeable. Riley's bald spot also comes down the tail a bit, and the skin is stretched too tight at the end and it bothers him. The vet did a horrible job. I have helped with tail docking on a litter before, and we pulled the skin a bit before cutting the tail so there would be a bit of extra skin for healing.

Anything related to tail docking, like the white from trauma, or being too short or too long, should not be heavily penalized as that is a man-made fault.

when RK and I were at the specialty show we saw some weims with ridiculously short tails... I mean to the point it looked weird!!! we also saw some with fairly longs tails... why would someone dock a tail so short? I would think people especially for show dogs would try and stay close to the standard and give their pups normal lenght tails (or close to the breed standard)

My father in his younger years worked for an individual that raised champion GSPs (was about 40 years ago or so), and he always said that the proper way to dock was to pull the skin so you would have enough to properly cover the end.

I'm no expert as I have not bred, but people make mistakes on tails a lot, even vets, maybe especially vets that haven't had a lot of experience. After all you have to guage a puppy's tail and be able to "see the future".......

I would much rather err on the side of long though (personal preference), but I've seen gorgeous dogs with tails too short and you hardly notice them since your eyes on are on the rest of the dog.

My father counted the number of the joints in the tail to get the correct length.

Anne, I will take a picture tonight and post it on Monday (my computer at home is broken).

GrayGhost, how many joints should the tail be, better make sure her tail has been done properly too!!

There's a "notch" in the tail for a better way of putting it where you can determine where to dock it. Indy's tail is a tad too long and you can feel where it was supposed to be docked.

Of that, I don't know. Nor do I know how easy it is to feel on a pup. I can however feel exactly where it should be on my adult undocked GSP though, like anne said. This would be a good question to ask someone that regularly breeds and regularly gets the length "right". Smile
