my two boys are always catching birds in the backyard, mainly pigeons and small magpies.
whenever we go to the park (which is huge with running creek),they run to the water and flush out anything that moves.
they have brought out rats, mice, and the occasional waterfowl(no ducks yet....damn!!)
their prey is usually dead when they bring it to me but they never destroy it,they bring it and eventually let me have it then they loose interest and carry on.
even at home when they are alone and catch a pigeon its always dead but always intact and usually lying in between their lounges as if they are gaurding it until i come home.
has anyone else got this behaviour with their weis?
cheers |

I'll find out next weekend. We go for our first retrieval trial.
Now my cats on the other hand kill and partially eat things. They know better than to bring them inside the house, so they drop them on the porch. |

I guess the weirdest thing my pup has caught (and killed) was a prairie dog.
When I take her down to Mexico, she loves sticking her ENTIRE (yes, entire...) head into the ocean to pick up shells on the ocean floor. She also has a tendency catch crabs, either in tidal pools or buried in the sand. (It's hilarious when she sniffs them out...LOL)
Game birds are a whole' nutha story. |

That's in there breeding. The bird drive is the same as the fur drive in them as well. I'm not sure what they smell in the crabs, perhaps just curiosity. A bunch of the guys caught some crayfish when we were training in Flagstaff during the summer. The dogs seemed very interested in them even after getting pinched.
Cassi backed off after she got pinched her first time...
Gives a new meaning to don't drink the water...

LOL! Hey that's quite a catch! Did the viszla get nailed in the tongue?
Let me know when you guys train up here, I'd love to meet up sometime.
Danni found a crab in the sand, dug it up and as she stuck her head in the hole she got nailed in the nose. -But that didn't stop her, she grabbed that crab and tore off a pincher.
Here's a picture of her on crab patrol. (See the crab to her left...it's the dark object she's looking at... )
