So I have had Scooter for over a month now and have been trying to lead train him for most of that month. He had never worn a collar or been on a lead before, let alone a walk, and he is 3 1/3 yrs old. So...I had tried to take him out a few times before but he was just too scared and I didn't want to push him or have an accident since we do walk on the streets here. Well, today I noticed that amazingly there wasn't much traffic or people at all (weird since it's the last day of our spring break here) and took him out for a good walk. He did amazing! Sure he was still a little scared and I was saying "Good boy Scooter! Good boy!" the entire walk but he did great. I'm terribly excited.
The only bad thing is that he barks when I take Sadie out for her walk. And he is so loud you can hear him all through the neighborhood. But when he's confident I will be able to take both out at the same time. |

| Congrats! I'm glad to hear Scooter is doing well. My dogs are a bit too eager on walks. They think Scooter's silly and want to teach him how to pull on the leash like weims are supposed to. |

I use a nylon chain collar. It is made primarily of nylon but also has a chain on it that tightens only when pulled. I started using it on my other dog Sadie because her neck is much bigger than her head and it helped to not slip off if she were to pull. But also I like using it on her because it still helps train her just not as sharply as a choke chain. It is less painful on the dogs neck.
Here is a picture of what they both wear. And also a crazy weim face! Silly boy.

Yay for Scooter! Small steps of progress are terrific!
I wasn't able to walk Nena and Gunther together very well when we adopted Gunther, but since training and the prong collar, Gunther is such a joy to walk and now I can walk both together without any chaos. |

I might have to try this. I didn't like the choke collar because I was afraid it would hurt him. Currently I have to put him in his seat belt harness to walk him. It works great, but is a pain to put on.
Do places like Petsmart have these collars?
P.S. I'm glad that you've decided to keep Scooter. You're doing a great thing for him and he looks so happy in the pics with Sadie. Best of luck. |

Yes, they have them. They are called martingale collars, Gunther has one also, but no chain, Lupine makes them without the chain. |

I actually have three of these collars (I like to trade colors on the dogs) and now swear by them. After taking Sadie to Obediance Class where we used choke chains she did so well that I was able to lose the chain and switch to a regular nylon collar, but she soon realized that there was no training reinforcement on those and acted out on walks. That's when I found this nylon choke. I love, love, love it! It's soft on the dogs but still gets the point acrossed in a correction.
I bought one of mine at a local Pet store and the other two at Petsmart. Here is a link but they only have two colors. You might check Petsmart because I actually got a purple, blue, and green one there.
In the picture the collars are actually too tight. When you have it on your dog you really want it to only have one link left between the rings when pulled tight. It should be flush against their neck, really. It's not meant to truly choke the dog but really to lightly correct.

Also these are good too. Especially if you have a long haired dog or a sensitive neck. It doesn't pinch as much. I actually made one by weaving nylon twine in and out of a regular chain. I'm what you call a do-it-yourself-er!

I use the ones with chains because with the rabies and id tags they make a certain amount of noise. With nearly 3 acres for my dogs I like to be able to hear them if they aren't close. |
