and I need some advice from others who run with their weims....how do you get them to jog with you....when I pick up the pace from a walk to a jog Wrigley just takes off sprinting....he is faster than me....and ends up pulling on leash which I do not want b/c it took me forever to get him to walk without pulling on his leash.....ideas on how to get started.....specific training ideas... he knows with me watch me but not really heel...thanks

Use the same concepts that you used to teach him not to pull, it should be easier for him to pick this up -- same concept, different speed. Smile

I'm getting ready to do the same with Sterling Very Happy I am so glad she's almost a year old. I'm looking forward to burning off her energy while we both run!

I thought you had to wait until they were 18 months to run/jog with them...?

My "jog" is fairly slow.. ok it's REALLY slow... Laughing Would it be okay to introduce Luna to jogging when she hits the year mark?

I think the 18mos mark is for "forced" exercise. I think it's fine to take her!

Oh, um, I mean NOOOOOO. You should definitely NOT take her! That will not be good for her, OR you!

I run every morning and most of the time unos good at staying by my side, but other times he'll see a dog and go crazy, so I started using gentle leader head collar which is a godsend because it makes everything so much simpler, today I took him on a bike ride with me, we had a blast, hes so good about it Smile

I run daily and decided to use a harness. He is not allowed to pull when we walk, but it is pretty hard not to when we run. I did not want him to get used to pulling on his flat collar or prong (plus it looks painful). He has actually done great with this method. We run in the bike lane of the Coast Highway, him beside me is really not desirable, single file is easier. So, ya he leads, plus uphill I tell him "mush" and I call him my secret weapon!

oh ya, it took time to get him clued in on the "workout" vs playtime. He understands this is not a "potty walk", he even poops on the run.....try avoiding that bomb! Yuck! So as for training be patient, they pick it up, although he still goes apeshit every once in a while....I think he gets a runner's high!

Hm, Gary wants to take Sophie jogging but he says he goes so slow and she keeps up without one bit of a problem. I was trying to tell him it's not a good idea, she's only 7 months.

Damn, why doesn't he listen to me? And then I wonder why my five year old and my dog don't listen to me.

Stupid question here...which side of the road do you run on??
Facing traffic or With traffic - there is a debate going on in our house about which side to walk on with the dogs. Smile

I guess you are supposed to run into traffic so you see it coming and the dog will be on the shoulder side of the road...

I spoke with our trainer on running with Wrigley and she said that as long as it is introduced slowly it is actually a good idea and will help to strengthen his muscle, bones and joints....we will start this spring...as soon as it is warm enough to run outside.

When we have to walk/jog in the road rather than on a sidewalk, we face the traffic, but I have the dog between me and the 'curbside' -- so that I would be between a vehicle and the dog.

Ive been running with mine for the last few weeks. Sterling is a year old, and Colt is nine and a half months. I don't think it's forced. I run pretty slow. In fact, they both just kind of trot to keep up with me. They are GREAT about staying next to me, and the energy it burns up for them is INCREDIBLE!! It's doing good things for my health as well Smile
