this is really disgusting, but Uno has a habit of raiding the bathroom trash can in my room, he doesent do it elsewhere, just my room, he only steals toilet paper and chews on it, other times I've caught his chewing on used tampons( I know, yuk). I've scolded him numerous times, sprayed with water, and keep the bathroom locked most of the time but he manages to still do it when I forget it.
My room looks like a mess after he's done, its pretty annoying.
any ideas? |

We had this problem with our kitchen garbage. Jack doesnt much care for the bathroom.. but its our kitchen. We ended up buying an additional pantry LOL so we can keep the garbage can in there where he can't get to it |

Can you keep it in a closet or under a cabinet? Or possibly ON TOP of something? I know they sell small ones with lids, but I doubt they're weim-proof!

| I use step cans. I have a mini one in the bathroom and Kasper has only gotten into it once and that was because there was a shampoo bottle in there and it kept the lid just a bit open and he nosed it open. I have a large one for the kitchen since I do not have a closet or pantry to keep it in. This has worked for me. |

| You think used tampons are gross. Kyle walked into the bathroom to find Jasper tossing a USED rubber around and having a good old time! I know TMI but too funny not to share. |

| Willa doesn't get into the trash when we are at home, but the moment we leave it's all over. She doesn't eat it, she just spreads it around. Now we put the trash can in the office and close the door and close the bathroom door when we leave. It might be a hassle to move the trash and close all the doors in the mornig, but it's easier than cleaning coffee grounds out of the carpet! |

I TRIED EVERYTHING. BUT TOMMY STILL GETS IN THE TRASH. THE ONLY THING WE CAN DO IS TO REMEMBER TO SHUT THE DOORS...EVEN IF HE KNOWS HOW TO OPEN DOORS NOW TOO... |

Hi,
My Remmi has what we call the smell circuit. She goes from the mini pinchers left over water and food mini is a grazer, then to the trash noses it, then to pantry gate and smells the air 80% of food waste is put there, then to the back door. Now this is good compared to my old apartment where she new how to use the step on device on the can installing a velcro latch worked wonders for that. I am a engineer so I ended up rigging compressed air to the trouble spots for training( I will tell you how this works out). But the best thing to do is be diligent about trash and food waste as well as setting boundaries with the dog. Before I go out or to work I empty all the trash in the house or areas she can get into clean off the counters etc then I use the turn around the garbage trick so hinges are facing the outside(old habit from puppy days not really needed at this point). Again its all about giving your dog the best chance to be good and eventually it will be.
But honestly the biggest cure for this is to make sure they are well fed and well watered and exercised and you drop a toy down for them before you leave to chew on. I honestly think this breed has the same problem some humans have and that they can not tell the difference from thirst or hunger all the time.
Also don't let him make it a routine mine learned also that if you make the lid if the trash slam shut daddy would appear to say no. This is when I started to empty the trash when she was in the kitchen or another room without me at bed time when she was smaller. She was with my old boxer but at 3:30am (also around the same time I get up to pee)it was I miss daddy time and she would destroy everything especially the metal can encased trash because it would wake me up and I would appear and say no trash go pee but the mistake I made was petting her and playing with her till 4am cause she is so cute and I love her to bittys. So like I said I emptied the trash receptacles and if she knocked it over it was fine I would wait to pee and ignore the can and set it upright in the morning and be fine. By the way 3:30 in the morning is still I miss daddy time but now she just hops up on my bed and snuggles in or we both go out for a pee.
She is doing so much better now I had treats on my piano keyboard next to my/our bed and she left them alone 2 months ago she would have gone for them while I was there, and sleeping forget it thats the same as not being home free for all time ,but she has not gone for the snacks or anything else in my room or kitchen. The new thing is that when I leave she will revert for 5 minutes to test my family who watches her for me to make sure the rules are the same and now that she knows she spent a whole day with my parents while I did jury duty and she didn't hit the garbage once and acted as if I was there. She even took a nap with my dad. I left him one of my work shirts and she made a nest out of it in the crook of his legs. (I think she has learned my dad loves cuddling and is really hamming it up for him.)
In closing the only time she goes into the trash is when human laziness has let the garbage get to a semi step of over filled and if there is something overly delicious and smelly right at the top now. I think all of the things I did worked for different times of her development. I am taking my notes and writing them into something understandable by other people at the moment and when I am done I will submit them to here. They are smart problem solving dogs that in the end you have to stay one step ahead of till they fully mature (hence my notes)and then you just have to make sure you reinforce everything you taught them when they were a puppy with love and fun.
Hope this helps I know its long and scattered but so is training a Weimmy ;0) |

| We put our trash under the sink in a cabinet but if you don't have that option a step lid trash can would be your next best bet while you work on training. A very close friend of mine lost his dog due to it eating out of the trash, specifically a used tampon was what sent the poor girl over the edge. The tampon made it through the stomach but got lodged in the intestines and then expanded more. When they took her into remove it they found a toddler sock, a tampon, toliet paper, and a small little ball from a kid's toy. It's unbelievably how much dogs will eat. This little girl was a Shih tzu. How that small of a dog fit all of that into her system I have no idea! |
