Amen to that! IMO, the same amount of planning should go into deciding to get a dog, as deciding to try to conceive a human baby.

AMEN!! |
I just realized - in addition to all of my planning and research on the subject, I will have been waiting EXACTLY 9 MONTHS for my puppy when I get him. My first ever contact with my breeder was in August, and my puppy comes home the last week of May! What the?!

You are young...just be realistic. You don't seem like the kind of person that needs this but I always tell young people getting a dog that it is a commitment for the lifetime of that dog. If there is anything you can think of that would put that dog's future with you at risk, please consider it now.
Some things to consider:
If you met a guy who didn't like your dog, who would you choose??
Would you ever consider moving to a place that doesn't take dogs??
As your career or family situation changed, would you still make time for your dog??
And there are many other things to keep in mind.
I'm in rescue and I have heard every sob story you can think of.....And almost none of them are justified.
I wish you all the luck in the world with your dog.

i do have a guy already that i am engaged too (been with him for 3 years now)
I would NEVER move somewhere where the didnt allow doggies
And i would always make time for my dogs
Thanks so much for the advice! |

I always tell people that ask me about Jack:
Are you ready to have a baby?
-- Seems extreme, but Weims require just as much love, attention, and positive feedback as an infant.
Jack is a GREAT dog, but only because of all the time vested. Weims can quickly become "out of control" and that can lead to a lot of unwanted problems (and eventually unwanted weims )
But - if your sure you have the time to dedicate to him/her and the PATIENCE (whomever said "Patience is a virtue... Owned a Weim or two LOL) then I say go for it.
Raised in the proper home with the right care ~ they are the sweetest animals ever |
