I am thinking of putting Chevy and Hemi in some sort of agility program. They need more exercise and stimulation, and this would be perfect!
I am a total newbie, I know nothing about it. They are young, is it still ok? They need some obedience work too, which we are doing slowly.. but surely.
Does anyone know of any places in Maryland? |

I think that is a great idea! If you have a good recall, sit and down you should be ready. A good agility program will start with the very basics, flat work and exposures to the obstacles. It is really a great outlet for their energy and intelligence. Scout is more worn out after agility practice than a 5 mile ski and I think it is because of the mental stimulation.
Sorry, I can't help you too much in finding a program as I am across the country but try your local kennel club or Weimaraner club for info.
Good Luck! |

| I think I am going to sign them up for obedience first. They need a lot of recall work. |

| It is probably a good idea. It can be pretty frustrating if the dogs don't stay with you. However, you can start a dog out in agility on a light lead. Most clubs practice in a fairly secure area whether indoors or in a fenced park. |

This is something I'd like to try with mine once I get him as well. I think it would be fun!
I also am concerned with starting too early. My experience is with horses (not that it's necessarily the same) and it's not good to have them doing high-impact activity or jumping when they're still young and their joints haven't matured. Is there anything of a parallel in dogs to be concerned about, does anyone know? I don't want to sacrifice any degenerative problems occurring any younger than they need to later in life . . . |

| Yes, it is the same with dogs. I think that AKC requires the dogs are 18 months before they can compete. It is probably best not to jump your dog at full height until his joints mature. You can practice handling and crosses with the bar set at a lower height. |

I did agility with my golden retriever in 4-h and at some AKC shows before. Pups can start learning tunnels and things like that when they are young, but they are not supossed to do any jumps because they're bones are still forming, and it could really hurt them. I think some places, (depending where you live) do have puppy agility classes that you could go to But yes, the pups do need to know basic obedience commands, if you want to do agility.
Im getting a weim next year (my first) and showing it in AKC agility. Its going to be lots of fun! Agility is my favorite sport!
Good luck |
