What does everyone use to get quail from the johnny house to the field? I looked at the directions to build a johnny house but it says to build it where you will be training and I don't have that option. I'll still build one but I need to know how to get them from point A to point B. I found a carrying cage but will they recall to these? This is what it looks like

For quick training sessions I carry quail in a small dog kennel with a upright water bottle, but I like to attach cardboard to their feet because I don't like waiting for all the quail to return...I just go collect them myself! Laughing
For all day events, (NAVHDA) I have a plastic quail coop. Here's the link to the one I have;

What makes this one so nice is that quail like to jump out... Twisted Evil and this enables you to catch one without losing any.
What you have there looks sufficient for a recall pen, does it have a funnel?
It looks like it does...which is what you need. -Oh make sure you have some sort of bottom to it or you'll have quail feces all over. Mad

Alright, I'm TOTALLY new to this and this may be a stupid question but here goes. You attach cardboard to their feet? Do you leave this on while they are out of the pen and you are working your dogs?

that cage will work if it has a recall funnel attached to the side. You can make one by getting some hard wire cloth and some bailing twine. Dogs unlimited or Lion Country supply sell recall pens I think what you have in that picture is a transport pen but I am not sure it could have a recall funnel I can not see. I believe Danni is talking about a method usually used with Pigeons to slow them down so you can collect them after they flush. A small square of cardboard say 3 inches square is attached via kite string to a rubber band which is wrapped around the legs of the pigeon. Some use empty plastic water bottles, the small size instead of the cardboard. The idea is to create drag on the bird as it flys which causes it to land after a short flight.

Thanks ymepointer! I tend to forget things in a hurry... Embarassed
Yes Travis, I'm referring to attaching cardboard to a quail's foot in the manner ymepointer explained.
Normally I do it for pigeons but the quail I have are great flyers Shocked
and I need some way to keep them in the same county. LOL!
The piece of cardboard is small so not to hinder flush but it creates drag and slows them down. By the use of cardboard, I only employ a few birds which are used muliple times in a single session...but I make sure not to tire them out. (Most are good for 3 rounds and I call it quits.)

Alright, I figured it was something like that, guess I just didn't realize they were strong enough to fly with something like that attached to them, but that actually answers a couple of other questions I had too. Thanks

You're welcome!
I know I was apprehensive about it at first but a little 3" x 2" (or something like that) tends to do the trick for me. On the other hand, my pigeons are avid flyers so they need something a little bigger.
Once I have removed the quail from the carrying case...then I attach the cardboard. I also have a bird bag which is so nice to keep birds in when I'm in the field. Since the birds have cardboard attached to their legs, I make the string long enough so the birds can be carried in the bad and the cardboard hangs on the outside of the bag. It stops everything from getting into a tangled mess...LOL! Here is a link to the one I have; http://shop.dogsunlimited.com/item.asp?n=bb&d=16&b=1 I know LCS also has one and it might be a little cheaper. http://www.lcsupply.com/
