I found this pen on-line to build. Will it work for me? Not planning on recalling birds to it so I shouldn't need a funnel, correct? I was thinking maybe 12 to 18 birds? What needs to be in it, i.e. feeders and things like that?
Oh, yeah it's 4' X 8' X 18" and the wire is 1/2" hardware cloth.

It will be fine to hold birds in, but only for short periods if you want them to fly well. Quail need a min. of 6 feet of height to properly develop and maintain breast muscle for flight. A nice size is 4x4x8. You can get plans from lcsupply.com. To encourage flight, place water high and feed low. It also helps keep them from soiling the water. Photo bucket is down right now. When it is back up, I'll post some pics of my johnny house.

Yeah, I did some reading last night and got to thinking about that. I figure I will end up going with more of the traditional looking pen. If you get time H2O I would love to see some pictures of yours. How many birds are you keeping? And how do you feed and water?

I can keep 30-40 bobwhites or 20-30 chukar w/o worrying about cannibalism. My JH is made from an old shipping crate and measures 4x5x9 on the main body. The aviary measures 2x4x2.The aviary is where I water w/ a gallon chick fountain. I use a hopper feeder in the bottom that holds about 5# of feed. I only have to feed once a week and water every 2-3 days depending on the weather.

Shocked
Nice...
I need to move to a place where we don't have the HOA breathing down our necks. I HATE keeping birds in the garage. Mad

What age birds should I be looking for? I read one article that said to get them at 6 weeks and put them in your JH for another 6 weeks before using them. I'm assuming that is so they will recall to the JH without a problem but since I won't be recalling them to my JH it shouldn't matter, right? Most everything I have read says that birds between 3months and 9 months are best. Does that sound about right?

Quail can fly as early as 2 weeks. They are difficult to brood w/o fatalities until 4 weeks. I would get what ever age I could over 4 weeks.

Leaving them in 6 weeks really isn't needed. If you leave a call bird or 2 in the JH, they will recall well after just a couple days to settle in. If you aren't recalling them, it won't matter at all.

Birds that are 6 weeks-6 months old fly better than older birds, but if you are using a launcher it doesn't matter much.
