We just got our first weim puppy last week and he's doing good...he's great with the crate training even though he has his occasional accidents and he's down to only waking us up twice a night and he doesn't cry in the crate....the thing is that everything is new to him
We got him from a breeder in Ohio where it's been snowing so he has been outside until we got him..we've been socializing him a lot and he does great with people and other dogs but if he hears a news (especially another dog barking) he freaks out and starts to cry.
How do we get him over this? It always happens when we have him out and trying to play and he immediately turns and bolts to go in the house and as many times as I can pick him up and take he back he just runs back and then ends up peeing in the house.
Does anyone have any advice?
Thanks |

| KD is 6 months and is still a little jumpy. She barks and then runs into the door to get back in the house. She will bark in the house to get out and then when I take her she runs from one end of the yard to the other and then goes for the door. At night and when she is in her crate, we put on a radio for her so she can't hear the sirens and other noises. She howls at night sometimes after looking out the window. We just ask her what she sees and check. Normally, nothing is there or someone is just walking by. |

Our puppy (his name is Grigio, means gray in italian) is 9 weeks old, so he's still really young. we live in NJ, the breeder we got him from was in Ohio so she never was able to take them outside due to all the snow.
We try to just ignore it and not make a big deal of it but he cries like a baby, runs up the steps and want to go it. Once he heard it and we took him in after realizing he wouldn't play b/c he was scared and he was like a little cry baby, he wanted to be held and kept whinning. |

Don't baby him when it comes to loud noises and noise in general. Try not to encourage the fear. Play as normally as possible. If he runs to the door, try to get him to come back without physically bringing him back. Have some good treats with you and only use them for that. When I really wanted one of my pups to do something I would use cheese or small pieces of hot dog.
As he gets older he will get less fearful. |

| Jonah is 7 month old today and is a little skittish with noises. This morning some tree surgeons on down the road were making a racket and he was a little unsure of himself. He used to run for the door as soon as he heard a dog bark. Now he just stops and pays attention. Taking him on walks where other dogs barked at him from their yards has helped. The last two evenings i took him for his walk in the dark. He was a little more skittish than usual but he did fine overall. I think if you don't make a big deal of it they get less fearful. After Jonah went to Petsmart for the first time he was a lot less fearful of barking noises because he heard so many while he was there. They do feed off your emotions. If you don't play into their fear with your own anxiety about their fear they will feed off your confidence and relaxed attitude. They are very astute animals! |

I hope you mean he was raised inside not outside....
You got some good advice. Keep up the socialization. This is the reason many breeders do not like raising winter puppies, it's hard to get them housebroken before they leave the breeders home. Your optimum socialization window is from when the pups are still at the breeders to about 16 weeks. You'll have some catching up to do, but keep working at it, do not coddle his fear and get him out in as many positive new situations as possible and give him lots of praise and treats for facing anything new. |

| Linkin used to be really fearful of noises when he was outside too. If he heard a noise but couldn't see where it was coming from he would run to the door with his hair sticking up. Eventually he grew out of it. |

hey jersey!
i agree with weimdawgs.. if you don't make a big deal, he should eventually get over it. it's hard not to baby them, but they need you to be strong.. he will look to you as to how to react.. if you laugh at him for being chicken, and coax him with yummies, you should begin to see some improvement. Hooch was afraid of other dogs, oddly enough, and would even try to hide in cabinets to get away from them, but we just kept exposing him to friendly dogs, and now he will even initiate play.. |

Hi I have the reverse with my pup - she is frightened of nothing! The most confident little soul I have ever had.
When I got her at 8 weeks I took her everywhere in a shoulder bag. We went to supermarket car parks etc. She was fascinated by it all. I took her hungry and rewarded her calmness with food and strokes
As soon as she had had her vacs I used to take her out and feed her in, some would say, the oddest places e.g.car parks, by the side of roads, playgrounds etc etc
If your pup is toy orientated then distracting them with a sqeaky toy can help
Timing is everything in this situation. Please resist the temptation to 'cuddle the puppy better' - this is only rewarding their fear.
Also don't anticipate the pup' reactions. If you are edgy then so will the pup be.
Calm, fun experiences has always helped my pups
good luck with yours |
