Has anyone read this book? I just picked it up, and I'm trying to learn about field trialing and hunt tests, but I don't know if this book is a good representation of that. If anyone has an opinion I'd love to hear it!

I haven't read that book, but we got Riddick primarily as a hunting dog, he was said to be the most birdie of the litter. I personally have no interest in hunting but my boyfriends does. Being a newbie at this, and having no idea where to start as far as the trials and training, I have just started talking to some other weim owners and breeders in my area, and found someone (a breeder) that does informal training for hunt and field trials. Basically they meet every thursday and walk the course just to see the dogs natural ability and prey drive. If you are interested, PM me and I can give you her contact info. I know you live across the US but at the very least she can give you some books to reference and what not. I might suggest that you do what I did and just start asking people where they got their dogs and if they can recommend any training kennels for hunt and field trials. I am sure their is a breeder in your area that will offer something similar. You will have to keep me posted on what you find out. We are planning on starting gun dog school with Riddick once he is old enough (10 mo.). Hope this helps...

I have this book and it is a good one. The techniques are sort of pre electricity for the most part and so take a little setup, but are proven methods. It is written in a question and answer format if I recall correctly( I bought it back in the late 80's or early 90's if I recall).

I remember another book that is of a similar vein, it is called "Training your dog for Birdwork" by Stephen C Rafe. It is very detail oriented in its methods , though some are very unique and center on dog Psychology):>)
