i was curious as to if a weim was bred with another breed, would the characteristics such as webbed feet and poiting be passed on to the offspring? is it a dominant gene?
thanks

Would depend on what the other breed was. I mean there are lots of breeds with webbed feet and that point. If you crossed a Weim and a GSP or some other similar breed, you'd probably get those characteristics.

In all liklihood there is probably no one "pointing gene," and I doubt if you bred a Weim to a non pointing dog you'd get good points. But all dogs DO point, it's just the stalking behavior that has been bred to the extreme by breeders that makes a dog point. So who knows you may get good pointing with a Weim and a Corgi.

My son has a weim border collie mix. I will have to post some pictures of her. She is very unique looking.

She is little, about 50 lbs. She has B/C marking; but weim colored. She has the amber eyes.

Philly is a very cute little dog.....but anyone who is not very familiar with the weim breed would not recognize it in her. She's been mistaken for a golden/ border collie mix.

There is a great book on hunting dog genetics, I think it is dutch in origin and the geneticist who wrote it did all sorts of crosses with pointers, hounds, spaniels to determine which hunting instincts were dominant. I can't find my copy but I know it covers this type of thing so if I find it I will post his findings(it is very old book as I recall)

Just talked to some UC Davis researchers this weekend at a field trial where they were taking samples from Weims and they believe that there is only one gene or very few involved in pointing. Very interesting stuff.

I have found that old book, published in english in 1950.....it is called

"Inheritance in Dogs with special reference to hunting breeds" by Ojvind Winge.

According to his book sighting some Whitney research with bloodhound X Pointers
1. Pointing is not completely dominant over flushing.
2. Backing is hereditary but independant of the pointing instinct.
3. loud hunting is dominant over silent hunting.
4. High style (high headed) hunting is dominant over low headed(nose to ground)
5. water love is hereditary and dominant(crossed newfoundlands and bloodhounds).
