I appreciate the link on pet food analysis: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/
However, I cannot find Canidae All Life Stages anywhere close to me. The Chicken & Rice and the Lamb & Rice formula did not rate as high as the "original" formula, but the original seems to be impossible to find. Do those of you who use Canidae feed the original formula or the chicken & rice or lamb & rice. Just curious....

I plan on getting Lamb and Rice, because Logan eats Science Diet Puppy - Lamb and Rice and does well on it. Regardless of which one rates higher, you might be best off trying all 3 maybe and seeing which your dog does best on.
Just a suggestion. |

I changed mine to the Chicken & Rice formula last month. They LOVE it. I went back to get another bag and they didn't have any of the Chicken and Rice so I got the Lamb and Rice. They love it too.
I appreciate the suggestions to change to this food. My little dogs were eating Large Breed Puppy food because Laney preferred Senior Food to her own. They just started their second 40lb bag and the difference in their coats is already showing. Laney is pretty much blowing her entire coat as are the ratties. My old man rattie (9) has much more energy and seems more aware than he has in a long time. My youngest rattie has always had itchy skin but that too has cleared and she is getting a new shiny black coat.
Thank you to all of you who graciously share your knowledge ! |

I just got my first bag today. (Thanks, Amy!) I got the original all life stages formula because it was rated much higher than either the chicken and rice or lamb and rice according to that website on pet food analysis. I hope the dogs do better on this than they have been doing on the Natural Balance. The pumpkin doesn't seem to be working. This morning I mixed 2 tbs of pumpkin in with oatmeal and a little bit of their food....and two of them had the runs at lunchtime. They don't appear to be sick, but I'm wondering if it might be something other than their food!

No problem!
How long have they had diarrhea? You should take in a fresh stool sample to your Vet to rule out any parasites. They can also tell by looking at the stool if they are digesting properly. |

In another post I mentioned LuvMyPet--the low cost vaccination clinic. I just sent in a stool sample to their lab, but it will take a week before I hear anything. Don't think it's parasites, but it could be bacterial. Whatever it is, it's been going on for at least a week. It's not always runny, but it's always very soft--and it's mostly on Banshee, the weim, but the others are soft as well. Pumpkin didn't seem to firm anything up, but maybe it takes a few days?

Yeah, if you just started pumpkin give it a few more days. Is it 100% pumpkin?
If it's not true diarrhea I wouldn't worry too much. How frequently do they go in a day?
Also, their stool won't firm up as soon as they start the food, it may even get worse before it gets better. See how it is in a couple of days. |

Well, their stools have changed colors--it's now a hearty brown instead of that light yellow pudding it was. It's still soft, but it's firmer than it was. The pumpkin I used was 100% organic canned pumpkin. They LOVED it and would eat the whole can if I let them. I limited it to 2 tablespoons per serving, but I didn't notice a change. I fed them 2 cans worth. I also tried oatmeal and white rice. Nothing made much difference. Hopefully, being on the Canidae for a few more days will help.
I should get the results of the stool sample back this week. thanks for all your help.
