A couple of weeks ago I noticed that my foster weim Hailey was limping on her right rear leg. I noticed her hock was swollen so I took her to the vet. He diagnosed her with OCD. Unfortunately it has been a chronic problem that was probably never treated by her former owner. After X-Ray My vet would like to refer me to an orthopedic surgeon in Sun Valley. Does anyone know how much a surgery like this costs? Hailey is a really great dog and I feel really bad that she is in a lot of pain but our humane society in not really well funded and I am not sure they could pay for the surgery.

I've never even heard of it. But I will look it up.

Maybe we could have a little on-line fund raiser of some sort. I'm not sure how that would work, but I would certainly donate to help.

I think OCD is a fancy name for elbow dysplasia.

I am actually very familiar with this bone and cartilage disease because I (yes a person) was diagnosed with it when I was 12. It required a lot of time to recover from it, but the course of action my orthopedic surgeon took didn't involve surgery.

After approximately 9 months of immobilization (a hard brace that didn't allow me to bend my knee) of which 6 months I was on crutches to keep all weight off the joint, I was able to return to normal activities with the disease gone. Of course there were months of rebuilding strength in that leg and it was not recommended that I run on it for a few months, but it has been 11 years and I haven't had any problems with it since. I even run a few miles every day and am trains for a half-marathon.

Something to keep in mind is that, since there was prolonged damage they amy very well have to removed the fragments of cartilage that are in the joint. Also, this course of action may no be possible with a dog given their active nature and inability to understand not putting weight on the joint. Good luck, and I hope that anything I said may give you hope.

Thanks btanner, It does help. It is good to have an idea of what options might be available to me before getting a surgical consult. Part of what I am worried about is putting her through surgery and not having a dramatic improvement. Sad Sounds like things worked out for you, hope Hailey will have as good of luck.
