I love the sound of a raw diet, but I am a broke newlywed/full time student, so funds are limited, and time too.
Can I mix the two options? Like lean ground turkey with kibble? I feed them Nutro Natural Choice Chicken and Rice for Sensitive Stomachs.
http://www.nutroproducts.com/ncdry-cro.shtml <--- food.
Chevy has tried (maybe) six different types, this one is the best so far, firmer stools. I want the best for them too... so raw mix??
Also, what type of raw bones can I give them..? Can I buy them at the grocer from the butcher..?? |

| I feed my guys a partial raw diet. They get kibble in the morning raw for dinner. |

| I feed raw about 3-4 times a week, usually in the evenings, I havent been to a butcher shop yet, and usually get chicken and beef and bones and grocery store or like super wal mart. Also check out oriental marts in your area or mexican carnicerias, they often carry meats. |

| Mostly chicken wings for raw meaty bones. Or chicken backs, turkey necks. I don't give weight bearing bones. For muscle meat, ground beef, turkey or chicken, thighs and breasts. Organ meat they get chicken hearts and liver or plain chicken livers. Or whatever gross organ meat they have at the supermarket. I also give ground veggies with fish. Canned sardines, mackeral, tuna, salmon. And raw eggs occasionally. |

| I went to wal mart the other day and got some chicken hearts and gizzards and turkey necks, quite inexpensive too, under $2, he likes the chicken, but was hesitant about turkey, so I cut it up in pieces, finally after trying to bury in under his bed several times, I had to wash it since it was covered in hair and lint, he decided it to give it a try, I think he liked the crunching sound as much as the taste and devoured a whole bowl on couple mins. |

From what I've read, if you want to mix the two, it's better to do what Weimdawgs does and feed all raw for one meal and all kibble for the other. I heard that because of the difference in the time it takes to digest each, they absorb less nutrients from the food if you mix raw and kibble in the same meal.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
Edited: Because I can't spell. |

I always heard chicken bones were terrible for dogs. You guys haven't had any problems? And when you say "raw" I assume you mean uncooked, correct?
To keep my dogs busy for hours--and since I gave up rawhide--I give them marrow bones I get at grocery store. I give them to them raw.

Cooked chicken bones are no good. Once you cook them they become brittle and can splinter. Raw chicken bones are softer and more pliable. And they love to chew them.
Like I said, I don't give them weight bearing bones. They are stronger and harder. |
