|
|
Hello, I am hoping someone will no about this problem than I. This is regarding my American Bulldog pup, you really don't get responses on their forum She started to get a discharge from her vulva area but she is not yet 4 months. Took her to the vet and vet had to do a "pup smear" he tried to crack a joke. Anyway it turns out she has extra skin around her vulva. He claims this is going to cause infections until she is spayed. Has anybody heard of this problem and what are your suggestions. She is on antibiotics and I also have to clean the are with medicated wipes twice a day. |

| I'd just continue to keep her clean down there until you can get her spayed. If she continues to get infections I would spay her early instead of waiting for her first heat cycle. |

My vet does not suggest spaying a large breed dog early. He says there is evidence now of there joints not developing right, especially the knees.
Thanks for responding. I have had this on the American Bulldog site for a day now with no response |

No problem. I agree with your Vet, hopefully you'll be able to keep her from getting infections. |

Going thru her heat cycle might fix the problem.
Why is she on antibiotics, does she have an infection? At her age, I'd assume that the discharge is puppy vaginitis... |

| Yeah, that is what the doctor said but it is really swollen and on top of that she had a bladder infection previously. It is like a brownish discharge (dried blood). |

Oooo, that doesn't sound like puppy vaginitis!
Yeah the heat cycle can help "push" the vulva out and thus get rid of the extra skin issue |

| Just wondering, Can I use peroxide on a cotton ball to really clean it. I got anitbacterial cleansing pads (they are like the ones for your face) but I am not really able to clean the area really good with this. |

My dog Ariel had an enlarged pee pee when she was a pup and it caused some discharges and the vet said to try and keep it clean and use vagisil on it if it looks irritated. What we have done is told her to "clean your pee pee" after she pees. We lift her leg while she's laying down and say those words and have trained her to clean her area herself.
The vet had mentioned that if she kept having infections, that he would have to trim some excess skin to aleviate the problem. I didn't like the way that sounded and she just turned 5 on the 6th and she's pretty much out grown her problem. |

That's good news! She is really good at letting me clean the area maybe because she is just a pup and has no idea what is going on |

I'm not sure she needs the anti-biotics...but the discharge should resolve after her first heat or when she is spayed. If she has extra skin, maybe the vet could remove it during her spay.
Anyway, I hope you get it resolved for her. You can come here for help anytime |
