I recently adopted an 11 month old female. She has not gone into heat yet...thankfully! I have always gotten my dogs spayed or neutered when they were young, but I truly think Banshee might be show-worthy. If I decide NOT to show her, should I wait until she goes into heat one time before I spay her, or should I do it right away? Any suggestions?

| I have a male dog so I can't really help. Do a search and I'm sure you find some answers. |

Peri,
I would get her evaluated by a breeder or handler that has finished some champions and has been around the show ring to help assess her. They may feel that she is not competitive in your area, and in which case, there is really no reason to keep her intact. If she were my bitch I'd wait until at least after the first heat cycle.
There are several discussions here on the timing of spay/neuter. |

I have always heard that waiting after the go into heat one time is better for them.
But i have no reason as to why its better. Sorry
Our weim just went through heat and it wasn't ANY fun, but its very manageable. Our heat experience was not near as bad as some people will tell you |

Thanks, Anne. I plan to do just that. Next week is a handling seminar and I am planning to bring Banshee so she can be evaluated by people who are experienced in the show dog arena. If they think she is show worthy, then I have a tough decision to make. If not, I will gladly haul her off to the vet for spaying before she goes into her first heat. Having read all the articles posted here about the pros and cons of spaying too early, I have no qualms about spaying her before her first heat since she is almost a year old. With four dogs, I don't think I can deal with breeding her. I'm too apt to KEEP the dang puppies!!!! |
