I know its been talked about many times but I just need to vent.
I finally made the appointment to have newman fixed against my husbands wishes but then my brother in law says that i need to wait untill he gets a year old but the vet and my trainer says to do it now while he is still young so now what do I do its already scheduled? I probably will have it done unless someone can give me a reason not to do it.

Anne wrote some good reasons on why to wait until 14-16 months but I can't find it.
If I remember most of the reasons had to do with studies that showed that growth plates didn't close properly if fixed too early.
My vet prefers to wait, her reasons have more to do with experience with health issues like arthritis and hip issues with dogs that are fixed too early. |

Here's the article:
http://www.caninesports.com/SpayNeuter.html
My husband found it when we were researching about buying a Weimaraner, then when we went to pick Jaeger up, our breeder included a print out of it in our info folder.
going by what we've read, we will be waiting |

Hmm... this is all very interesting. We were considering getting Linkin neutered at about 7 months, but now I'm not so sure.
There are always two sides of every issue. Does anyone know what the benefits are to neutering at around 6 months of age? |

| We fixed Kaiser at 7 months so that we could take him to doggy daycare. He was having so many behavior issues at the time, and the vet mentioned he might be less dominant if he were fixed. We were willing to try anything at that point. But honestly I don't think we will ever know if being fixed calmed him down. He might just have grown out of issues... of well, I didn't know that there were any health problems associated with being fixed at 7 months. He didn't seem fazed at all by the ordeal. |

We are trying to wait for the year mark. Our breeder asked us to wait until 9 months or older for the growth plate issue. Of the two vets we see (same clinic) they have differing opinions. The one is happy for us to wait as long as we can be certain that he won't father any puppies. The other one is stuck on the 6 month mark for decreasing boyish habits and marking.
We have always left our dogs until at least a year so I just assumed that's what I would do with Marvin. At 7.5 months, he hasn't shown many boyish habits except his nose seems much more interested in telephone posts, fire hydrants and park garbage cans and he has tried to hump twice and was quickly told not to. That being said, if he never lifted his leg I'd be fine with it. My little man wants to own the world thankfully just outside. |

Thanks for the article. I just posted the very same question. I have an 11 mo. female and wasn't sure I wanted to wait until after her first heat cycle to have her spayed.
