Hi Tim,
Is there any way you can get some help? A pheasant wing isn't going to tell you much.
If I were evaluating a dog for hunt potential I would want to see what he does on a live bird. I would want to see him chase it down. The crazier he is the better.
It may take several exposures to get his drive in gear.
Some dogs have it and other dogs don't. That part is in the breeding. |

| I agree with Anne. The only thing I would add is do NOT use pheasants to introduce the dog to birds. Use pigeons, quail, maybe even chukar, but not pheasants. They are too big and unruly for intros. Another bird that works well are meadowlarks, not for training, but to see desire. Take him to a field full of them and see what he'll do. They react very similar to quail, but always flush away from a dog, unlike quail, who sometimes flush into the dogs face. |

| Thanks h20, sometimes it's hard for me to remember to say things like about pheasant being too intimidating for first time bird intros. |
