| It's so easy to let the older one take care of the puppy but in the long run, it just makes the younger one dependent on the older one. I am very determined NOT to let this happen. Like I said, I am going to continue my one on one training with Duke AND do one on one training with the new little one. Double the time and trouble? Yes you bet, but I am determined! |

I agree with Anne. My 2nd was "unplanned" and pretty needy due to her 1st experience...it was a BIG adjustment since Cooper was so easy as a pup. I was exhausted. Hubby and I also had a few "Battles Royale" regarding division of labor with the dogs. We are finally settling in after nearly 9 months.
Also, when you have 2 dogs, people will dump on you for being a crazy dog lady!
Not that I'd give either up now... |

Oh just wait until you have a moment of weakness and go from 2 to 3. THAT is a huge adjustment, I don't know why. Maybe it's becuase you have 2 arms, not 3. Having 3 means, 2 potty trips when you are traveling, whereas 2 dogs means 1 trip. 2 crates fit easily in my SUV, but 3 means adjusting everything, etc.
And for some reason the food issue,.... it's noticeable when you are feeding 3.
I will have 3 again next year and with allt he dogs that come in and out of my house, the puppies etc., my house is always full of dogs. I lvoe it of course and love all the dogs.. but sometimes I think back towhen I had only Riley, and how reliable he is at age 7, we are so in tune, it just comes with time and age... and it's nice to have those quiet moments with an adult dogs that knows you and you know him....
Maybe I jsut need a vacation! LOL |

| Well this puppy isn't number 2 it's number 4! LOL!!! Our Golden is going on 14 and he's not doing real well and we know he won't be with us too much longer (breaks my heart) and our Pug is 5 and the EASIEST dog in the world. It's the 2 Weims that are the challenge. There won't be any fighting between the hubby and I because I know that the dogs are my thing. He works and I don't so that is just a given. I pick up poop, feed, train etc etc. I have actually lost weight since Duke arrived and expect to lose even more (which wouldn't hurt btw). I'm sure there will be days where I am pulling my hair out, but I'm also sure there will be days where I'm in doggie heaven. It will all be ok, I just know it. I'm only worried about Duke regressing out of jealousy at this point. |

| And I have to tell you all a funny little story. Duke was so unbelievably horrible walking on a leash. My husband tried, I tried, but he just pulled our arms off! I got the Gentle Leader and battled with Duke on that for about a week. He hated it, and would just sit there and not move. I persisted. Finally we could go to the end of the block (still a battle) but we made it. Then he wouldn't go any further and just wanted to come back home. I gave it a rest for a couple of days, then took him out and something miraculous happened. He pranced at my side with his head held up high with absolutely NO pulling! AND he walked further than a block. I told my husband and was absolutely thrilled, but I don't think he believed me. Than last Sat I told hubby I was taking Duke for a walk. On our way back the hubby peaked out the window and saw us walking and ran outside and said "that's amazing!". Can I take him for a walk? I said sure, and explained how to give a gentle tug if necessary. Well he took Duke for a wonderful walk and really enjoyed people telling him what a beautiful and well behaved puppy he had! HA.....all my hard work and he gets the prasie, lol. I think once Duke is more trained my hubby will be thrilled to walk him and take him places. |

EXACTLY!!!!!!! My husband says the same thing about his love of fly-fishing---my family has no interest in hearing anything about it because they all think of it as a red-neck sport. My family are a-holes  . Well, except for my sister---she loves hearing about anything I want to talk about, even KAM!!!! |

| The Golden "Boomer" awww that is such a tough one. My husband and I both know that his time with us is limited, but we both kinda act like it isn't so. It's something that I cannot even bear to think about (putting him down). We've had him since he was 12 weeks and you couldn't ask for a better dog. The gentlest, kindest, most well behaved dog you have ever seen! I'm even getting teary eyed now. I just don't know when we will know when the time is right, ya know? |

Of course!! I completely understand. I think I lose Mother of the Year title by Jan 4th each year (both human and fur kids LOL)~ but you know what?? I have GREAT kids and an even GREATER dog....so who are the smart cookies now?  |

My dogs are happy to have some alone time, altho they get along with each other fine.... It's a lot more work for me though, especially for training and keeping them in condition. Instead of 30-60 min a day of conditioning, it means 60-120 minutes... time I feel like I don't have sometimes! Oh well. |
I guess every situation is different, because in my situation, my two small dogs pal around together, but I'm still the leader, and my two weims are best buds...but I do spend an awful lot of time with all of them individually. I have not in any way let the older one take care of the puppy...of course, both mine really ARE puppies. Sterling is almost ten months, and colt is almost seven months. I will say this. It really is a full-time job...I have patience for animals that is almost unheard of though. David was alone with all four on Sunday for about three hours, and I thought he was going to run out of the house and never come back when I got home 
Of course, he is NOT in any way alpha....he's a pushover, and none of the dogs listen to him much at all...so i can see where he was a little overwhelmed.
You'll do fine with Duke and the new puppy. I got lucky, and Sterling was my Devil puppy....I went through so many hard times with her. She's very stubborn and still gives me dirty looks sometimes when I tell her to do something...Colt looks at me like I am the most wonderful thing ever thrown into his life...it's almost like he's constantly asking what he can do to get a cuddle...he's always willing to do WHATEVER I ask of him.
Just make sure you spend equal time training and loving both of them. It's hard work, but so well worth it!!!! |
